I always wanted to play that game since it was announced and still in development, but never had the chance.

Niuus, where did you find the Wii changelog? by testing it yourself?
to get the best version you need to mix PSX (background) and Windows files (paf for the videos)? I see in your post that the PSX background is not working yet on Wii, but works on switch.
did you try both? which is the preferred version, wii or switch or are they identical experiences?

Thanks for your work on porting that game (cyx & @usineur0)

As stated on my post, out of my own experience, since i have been basically testing each and every version, using all the supported controllers and sometimes crazy file combinations of the available Heart of Darkness distros (i am only lacking the japanese PC HoD). Also finished the title in ALL of the releases, so i have become terribly familiar with the game.

I saw on cyx's twitter that he was pointed out that this thread exists, so he is been pretty much correcting 99% of the bugs i have found, so it's a win-win situation for all of us homebrew lovers B-). Cyx is a Homebrew Hero!

PSX backgrounds are also working on the Vita port by usineur, last time i tested. I could not finish the game and keep testing on that one, since the character can't perform a vital move in one of the levels (since you haven't played it, i won't spoil it for you). Don't have a Switch so that one is out of my reach.

I haven't tested on vWii, but i don't see why it wouldn't work 1:1 as in native Wii.

A somehow technical thing i've read on another forum, PSX backgrounds are not necessarily 100% better, they just have -supposedly- a little bit more color depth, but that's it. Same resolution as the PC files, so right now you're not losing anything indispensable. Maybe the videos have better resolution, but that one i can't compare since those are definitely not usable right now in any of the ports, AFAIK.

If you're a CRT user, i would recommend above all else the Wii port, it looks and plays phenomenal. If you're stuck on modern displays and have nothing but a hacked Switch, i guess it would be fine too, i just don't know the specific bugs that one might have regarding the original experience.

Thank you for your detailed answer :)
On cyx gitub, I found a comparison of psx and windows graphics, some of the psx had new foreground element color, while on windows it's a simple shadow.

look at the last picture on that page, you can see bone's texture on PSX version:

But thank you, I'll go with the windows version on Wii :)

edit:
I find it great that Cyx is detailing his steps and how he worked on the game and provide code examples (on that psx page, and on other pdfs), and not just releasing final tools and executable.

Hey! That was a very interesting technical read, i got hooked.

Enjoy the game on the Wii! I recommend you to adjust frame_duration setting in the ini, the written value makes the game fluid, but way too f*kin fast and unfair (you'll see it farther in the game) :D

It´s now on the original Xbox as well.

Also of notice, there is another Xbox port available! The difference being that the latter is being made with NXDK, the open source Development Kit.

I tried the game for the first time today.
I forgot how low res games looked like in 90's :P

I used v6
the audio of the videos is not very good, but I don't know if it's the video itself, or HODE engine on the wii.
during the video (mostly at the start of the game, later it's better), the music is loud, and the speech is not very clear.

I completed Lv1, I fell often until I understood what to do, but it's fine :)
The first time I tried to exit the game, it froze on black screen.
I reboot and loaded the game. the game properly saved my progress. I tried to exit again and it worked and exited to HBC.

well, so far all works fine. I followed the guideline you posted (not go to option, or video before starting the game)
thanks for the engine and posting new version here :)
