Hi, I'm a fan of Spain from Ace Attorney. I wanted to know if you can edit the game from the same rom or you need to make scripts for the game and insert them. The information I want now is a table with the hexadecimal values of the Japanese characters and gradually modifying the game. the program I use is 010 editor for roms of gba.
the only thing I have been able to edit in Spanish in the saga is from its translations, I hope your help.

Words using the latin alphabet (like english and spanish) are much longer than words using the kanji alphabet (japanese). So, if you directly replaced a japanese word in the rom, you would overlap the next word.

Also, the scripts in the rom are compressed, so what you see in your hex editor is meaningless information that cannot be directly translated to any language.

Apart from text, the scripts also contain "control codes" which control the flow of the game, as well as all the audiovisual effects. Translating the scripts also requires that you move or replace them.

What you need to do is extract the japanese scripts, decompress them, and based on these make new scripts in your language.

Also, have in mind that the original japanese rom contains a fixed-width font displaying routine that will not suit your needs. It is only meant for japanese and it is too wide to fit english or spanish sentences (it can only take up to 15 characters per line).

At this point, it is meaningless to provide you with a japanese character table and their hexadecimal values. You need to figure out a lot of other things first.

Hi h3rmit and guys from gbatemp, it turns out that I find it very difficult everything about the scripts and the control codes, so I focused only on my gba text editor (010 editor) and I learned from the same rom so much that I could build a table Hex of the complete Japanese characters and the control codes to advance text and put it in red and blue in addition to other things I found, but now a problem has arisen and is this, how could I solve it?
I want to join the letters more since they come out very apart.
but everything was thanks to its translation and from there I could guide myself in some things, by the way it is the save screen of gyakuten saiban 2.

I can say that your progress is impressive for someone who is new to ROM hacking!

However, what you see now is only the tip of an iceberg. You will soon have to solve a lot more problems that will arise.

First of all, the Gyakuten Saiban games were designed to only display japanese characters using a fixed-width font. To better understand this, have a look at this comparison between a variable-width and a fixed-width font:

variable_vs_fixed.png

So, if you just replace the japanese letters using 010 editor, you will have no way of bringing them closer to each other. You can use a fixed-width font, so that they will look like they are closer together, but your translation will have to be 15 characters per line at most.

The solution to this problem is to re-program the game, and make it display latin characters in a different way. Broco had done an amazing job on that for Gyakuten Saiban 3. You can have a look at the file fontsplit.S in the "Comeback Courtroom" files:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=109053&package_id=136688&release_id=500989

Your next problem will be that there aren't enough japanese characters to replace in order to make a real translation. Many japanese sentences are only 2-3 characters long, so you can't really translate that by directly replacing the letters. If you use more letters, you will overwrite other control codes and probably crash the game.

Also, the save screen is one of the very few scripts that are actually uncompressed. That's why you were able to edit it directly. But that's not the case with the rest of the game. Most of the game's scripts are compressed and you can't edit them directly.

Now, I don't really want to discourage you. You have done a lot of effort by yourself, and that's impressive and commendable! But your current approach is wrong, and it will lead you nowhere. Instead, I think it would be better to understand how the english translation was done, and start from there.

it turns out that I find it very difficult everything about the scripts and the control codes

Then what you need is a nice explanation! Send me a pm, I can probably help.

So guys we did it, we finally got case 2 translated, checked and released. I joined h3rmit a while ago as a complete newbie, who wanted to help with this awesome project! It took some time to learn how all this romhacking works, inserting text etc., and we have certainly made progress with the project! :D
We've worked hard on this and hope you'll enjoy this release! :yaysp:

Make sure to report any bugs you might encounter!

Also, if anyone has a flashcart like Everdrive or EZ-Flash, please tell us if it works on actual hardware - we would love to know! :gba:

And Happy New Year to everyone from me, too! :D

Just tried it out on mGBA and noticed this. I remember that this text supposed to be centered in the middle or at least be in the top middle section in the japanese version? Is this a bug or intentional?

Oh and amazing work! I'll try finishing it

Oh, my! What a suprising bug! We will be releasing a hotfix for that in the next few hours.

As for the non-centered text, it was left intentionally like this for now, due to the amount of work needed to manually center every title and re-test it. However, we may be centering these in later edits.

Mr h3rmit! i am really impressed by all the work and effort you have put into this translation, i am really interested in how you made all of this, although i heard you don't usually share the programs you use for this amazing translation! and i know that i am just a regular fan of GS, but i am really really eager to learn how to translate these games, i want the people who usually can't afford a DS or actual re releases of the trilogy, that's why i am asking if you could share some of that knowledge to tranlsate these games to spanish! it would be really helpful if you could lend me a hand cuz i am kinda new into all of this hacking and translation, that's all i am asking, if you took the time to read all of this thank you! and have a good day! :)

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

also, just found a bug, i literally just started the game and this happens :(

Then you are probably patching the wrong ROM.
If you are talking about GS1, there are a few different versions of the ROM around.
The patch I'm providing for GS1 only works for: "Gyakuten Saiban (J)(Lightforce)"

Well, in the process of trying to make the translations, I discovered a lot of things about the GS ROMs, and I had to build a few programs to perform tasks that were impossible to do by hand, or to simplify difficult tasks. I built these programs for myself, and only to the extend that they could just do the job they were created for. Creating nice user interfaces or writing manuals on how to use them falls out of the scope of this project, and there was neither any point or enough free time to do so. After all, I picked up this project with the intention to translate the ROMs, not to publish programs.

I can probably provide some guidance/assistance in what you're looking for. Send me a PM.

P.S.: Have in mind that xXcristhianXx is also doing some work for GS in Spanish, you should probably contact him too if you haven't already done so.

Just played through it on my gameboy sp with the everdrive, only noticed these two "issues"
0.jpg select button is cut off
1.jpg after saving and reloading the text is gone same happens with regular text boxes
Rom MD5 that I used: BEB99EAC85F11113795BBD0F5923A9E4
MD5 after patching: F53D1D29AB2C33AECE30D6CB00DED328

Anyway I'm happy to test on hardware and report back when new updates are available :)

Yup, that is a common bug, that would require stupid amounts of effort and time to fix it, as it's a rather complicated and painful process, with no real payoff. Just remember to *not* save at selection points :)

Feel free to report any bugs to h3rmit or me in DMs or here.

おはいよ、Gyakuten Saiban Translation Team! Or, rather, h3rmit and Spazzery...sorry, couldn't help speaking some Japanese there. I'm honestly kinda thrilled that this project's been revived! I've always kinda wanted a full translation of at least one of the GBA Ace Attorney's to be made, and to see the same people behind the 'Comeback Courtroom 3' project (or the fan-made Trials and Tribulations GBA translation for those not aware) do one for the original Gyakuten Saiban is making me super hyped!

If you want, I can help in my free time by making some new graphics. At the very least, I can make new exclamation bubbles ("Objection!", "Hold it!", etc) more accurate to the Japanese original and Spanish translation. I'll be sure to submit my progress in this thread when possible.

That said, I have encountered one bug with "The First Turnabout": When Mia objects to Sahwit's departure, "Pursuit ~ Cornered (Variation)" doesn't start up again, unlike how it is in the raw game and Spanish translation. Videos depicting this exist, though I do not know if people have reported this yet. Sorry if I'm repeating a report from the past.

And with that, I wish all of you happy trails.

異議あり!

Gyakuten Saiban 3 has actually been finished for a long time now, and is fully playable. Most of the work done it was made solely by h3rmit :)

This is a weird situation really, because Gyakuten Saiban 1 on the GBA was the first game they ever made. In the DS release (even in Japan), various improvements were made and many sound effects, shakes and stuff like that was added. We've encountered quite a many situations like this already, where there are discrepancies between the GBA and DS version regarding the music playing. However, at the moment, we are trying to make it playable it English and preserve it as it is on the GBA, and that means there exist some oddities, which are only present in the GBA version.

If you find the gyakuten saiban 1 version for gba strange, you can try the Spanish version that I made with the help of h3rmit.
