What will the next Xbox be called?

xbox_naming.jpg

With the recent official acknowledgement of the next-gen PlayStation and its unsurprising, yet conventional name of PlayStation 5, we are left wondering what direction Microsoft will choose when it comes to naming their successor to the Xbox One.

The Xbox brand has had a less than straight forward history when it comes to naming their hardware after the release of the original Xbox in 2001.

With the upcoming release of the PlayStation 3 in 2005/06, Microsoft allegedly wanted to avoid calling their next console the Xbox 2 to avoid consumers splitting hairs between numbers and causing consumer confusion with possible assumptions that 2 is greater than 3, so instead they opted for the Xbox 360 name when it released ahead of the PS3 in '05. Though this decision only furthered complications when it came time for the next generation Xbox...

Though many believed the next generation Xbox would be called the Xbox 720 after a supposed teaser was seen in the trailer for the 2011 film 'Reel Steel'. Instead, Microsoft chose to go back to the drawing board and turned heads when they revealed the Xbox One name during the Xbox Reveal 2013 event. The Xbox One released in 2013 up against the PlayStation 4.

Further revisions of the Xbox One would be released under the monikers Xbox One S and Xbox One X. With the S being a revised, cost efficient revision of the original Xbox One and the X being a competitor to the rival PS4 Pro.

It's all a stark contrast to Sony's continued method of naming each home console PlayStation revision numerically and this makes us wonder what Microsoft will decide when it comes to naming the next Xbox which is rumoured to release in 2020 against the PlayStation 5.

Will they follow the likes of the Windows and Android teams and jump to 10 or perhaps X? What are your thoughts?

it will be called a budget pc..... that requires an internet connection to function.
the xbox doesn't require a internet connection to function and you cannot build a PC at X specs for 400

why are people so quick to bluntly lie about shit

Lookimg at how manny times the 4k games run at 30 fps, you can. Don't forget that consoles never run games on ultra presets and such.
But the main point of PCs is that you can run anything, because you can play with the settings, so you can always get at least 60fps.
Also, msrp is $499 so count with that.

I think it should just reboot with "Xbox". The names are all messed up. Sony has some boring names for their system but at least you know which system is newer.

I messed up and voted without seeing the something else option X|, anyway it's interesting for it to be called Xbox Infinite/Infinite Xbox, it wouldn't be a surprised if they went for the mythology on this and call it Xbox Zeus, Xbox Odin or something, but I've heard it'll be called Xbox Scarlett (so I wonder, will the console's color be red?)

Bet you they are going to call it something confusing like XBox 2 or XBox V. Pretty much no matter what they call it at this point it's going to be confusing. XBox Next is not a bad name, but it will create complications when they are naming the next gen after it. Just calling it "Xbox" would be the most confusing of all, two XBox 1's is bad enough.
They should have just kept things simple, so that naming next gen consoles wouldn't be so complicated.
SeXbox. It should have a fleashlight as part of the system.
Someone already took that name.

Because they floated the idea of making the xbox one a discless system, or digital only rather (disc to function as vouchers for digital games). Huge blow-back, so we got our physical games systems for this generation. Sony also tried it, but were a bit more vague about it. so when sony changed their minds after xbox got blow-back, not many people noticed. In the here and now, microsoft has the discless xbox s, which obviously requires internet to play/download games.

They want a digital-only future. When they do, they'll control all game distribution on their platform. the used games market for their console won't exist, and they'll have control over distribution. They'll make more money, more consistently. It's definitely something to be wary of and call them out for it whenever they try. We'll see how they handle this gen, but ps5 seems to still support physical games...just have to make sure they don't push a "disc is a digital voucher" nonsense.

X specs for 400? agree, that's not doable really. Especially when you would have to make it beefier to accommodate OS overhead (and games won't be coded for one piece of hardware, so less efficient).
