What will the next Xbox be called?

xbox_naming.jpg

With the recent official acknowledgement of the next-gen PlayStation and its unsurprising, yet conventional name of PlayStation 5, we are left wondering what direction Microsoft will choose when it comes to naming their successor to the Xbox One.

The Xbox brand has had a less than straight forward history when it comes to naming their hardware after the release of the original Xbox in 2001.

With the upcoming release of the PlayStation 3 in 2005/06, Microsoft allegedly wanted to avoid calling their next console the Xbox 2 to avoid consumers splitting hairs between numbers and causing consumer confusion with possible assumptions that 2 is greater than 3, so instead they opted for the Xbox 360 name when it released ahead of the PS3 in '05. Though this decision only furthered complications when it came time for the next generation Xbox...

Though many believed the next generation Xbox would be called the Xbox 720 after a supposed teaser was seen in the trailer for the 2011 film 'Reel Steel'. Instead, Microsoft chose to go back to the drawing board and turned heads when they revealed the Xbox One name during the Xbox Reveal 2013 event. The Xbox One released in 2013 up against the PlayStation 4.

Further revisions of the Xbox One would be released under the monikers Xbox One S and Xbox One X. With the S being a revised, cost efficient revision of the original Xbox One and the X being a competitor to the rival PS4 Pro.

It's all a stark contrast to Sony's continued method of naming each home console PlayStation revision numerically and this makes us wonder what Microsoft will decide when it comes to naming the next Xbox which is rumoured to release in 2020 against the PlayStation 5.

Will they follow the likes of the Windows and Android teams and jump to 10 or perhaps X? What are your thoughts?

I propose several unusual names:
  • Ybox
  • Xbox Negative Two Hundred
  • Zbox
  • Xbox Two Million, Nine Hundred Forty-Three, Seven Hundred Fifty One Point Six
  • Xball (the next one will be spherical)
  • XboXboXboXboXboXboXboX... Jeez, this one could take a while.
  • Xbox Classic (they won't make a new one, just rerelease the oldest one as a mini version)
  • Microsoft Playstation - Better still, Microsoft Switch! :rofl2:

I honestly doubt they will use the number thing again. Consumer confusion abounded when they went from 360 to "One". Core gamers know which is which, but many non-gamers can be confused by the lack of numerical progression, and the fact that the "One" is actually the 3rd Xbox. It's kind of like how some people thought Wii U was a tablet add-on for the Wii, not its own console.

I'd bet something like "Xbox Next", but it's anybody's guess for what snazzy word they choose to append after the "Xbox".

I was thinking of the great console names like the atari jaguar yeh it didn't do well but tht was of course due to other factors not the name branding - it's not tht difficult thinking of an eye catching name for a brand I just thought of this in a few mins and here it is the xbox bolt yes you see what it means bolt as in lighting strikes like the jaguar name powerful meaning behind it and then they could design the console with lightning strikes with the x logo and on the game boxes

it's definitely going to be "10BO10"
They were clearly just waiting for the right moment to change to arabic numerals.

Xbox 1440 because XB1 is the 720 and the next gen is gonna try and boast ultra HD

This is M$ so something retarded and cheeky like they did for Xbox One as they thought they have a laugh and have people call it "The One"

Every X-Box from here on out will be the X-Box and there will be just be version numbers

Maybe they’ll follow the latest trend of corporate China ass kissing and call it the Xi Box

That'd make choosing a next generation console and platform easy for yours truly, as if it wasn't already easy enough as is...
