I wanna grab a 2TB Passport to hook up to my Wii, but I'm unsure if the Wii will be compatible. What's the recommendation for external drives for the Wii? Do you need an external power source? And what is the max size limit?

I always use a Y cable. No problems whatsoever. Never I encountered a problem of USB loader not recognizing the HDD after I used of of those cables.
I believe that sometimes when not using a Y cable, the drive can enter in sleep mode, and USB Loader can't find it on boot.

The Wii is not as annoying as the Wii U for external devices (which I think it is very stupid making digital purchases unnecessarily complicated), most 2'5 hard drives and SSDs dont need external power or Y cables, only for 3'5 drives which tend to pull more energy to work, but they normally come with power supplies anyway.

All HDD I've tested work without an external source of energy but the USB. You can even use USB sticks for that matter.

Because of this, I've been looking to update the compatibility list of external storage devices to modern devices and even enclosures.

The USB stick that I used with no problems are Kingston DTSE9 16GB, when it comes to HD or enclosures, I have the same problems. I have tested 5 different external HDD that I have with me. The only one that really works with it is the Samsung S2 500GB HXMU050DA but all the external devices I have are relatively old so I don't know how much it would help.

That is what I'm trying to make an update on the list https://gbatemp.net/threads/updating-the-storage-compatibility-list.535744/
