So I bought a switch on eBay a while back which was listed as "faulty". The only faulty part of it was that the game card reader did not work and so I decided to purchase it and replace the reader.

On arrival I confirmed that it didn't work as putting the games in did nothing apart from show an error message after a few seconds saying the game card could not be read. These games I tested were definitely working as I could use them on my other switch.

So, I bought a replacement reader off eBay and when opening it up it seemed to have some sort of corrosion damage just on the slot as if someone had spilt something on it. I gave the surrounding PCB and connectors a good clean with isopropyl alcohol and replaced the reader but this did not seem to fix anything.

I took it apart a further two times and commented on some videos on YouTube which suggested checking the connectors ,and which I did, and everything seemed fine.

After some searching I found something about disabling the game cart reader when downgrading? And as this was a switch that could be exploited with the fusee gelee exploit I suspected maybe it was something to do with that? I'm really not too knowledgeable on switch modding apart from installing cfw but I don't know the ins and outs of it.

My question is - does anyone know if there's any chance the game cart is disabled and can be re-enabled? Or do you reckon it's broken somewhere else? Or perhaps I got a dodgy replacement part and should try another one from a different seller?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Disabling the game cart is what you do in CFW if you are on 4.1.0 or below - that's not the problem. It's probably a hardware issue.
Yeah I thought that as I also did a factory restore which didn't seem to fix it - think I might try another replacement part from a trusted seller near me
