So I bought a 2DSXL from the UK, and another from the US so I can install the US motherboard into the UK shell. I decided to so this because I wanted the specific UK shell design with the function of being able to use US game cards in it. (I was told it was possible to do as long as the motherboards were switched)

I had taken the US battery and board and put it into the UK shell successfully, making sure to have fastened each cable securely. (I did the same thing with the other console; UK battery and board in US shell)

After everything was put together, I tried to turn on each of the consoles and they BOTH had the same result: The blue light would turn on for a second and then the system would shut off with an audible pop sound, as if something was wrong with the batteries or the cables. But here's the thing I don't understand, I returned each board/battery to it’s original device and both consoles worked perfectly, so it’s not like there was something wrong with the batteries or cables.

I have tried doing this before and it worked, but only on the system I wasn’t going to use. I’m starting to wonder if it’s even possible, especially since I have yet to see anyone else try this on the 2DSXL.

You've got a few possibilites for the blue light + pop. As for the most probable ones judging by personal experience:
- You hadn't grounded yourself before handling the boards and fried them
- Some component like the screen isn't seated properly in the connectors
- You have a 'soft' short-circuit somewhere

But wouldn't those issues also keep the system from working after I reinstalled the boards back into their respective housings? They work perfectly fine now, its just when I switch the motherboards...

You can play out of region games with custom firmware.

The only reason to swap in the US motherboard in the UK body is to have access to USA region Nintendo eShop on the assembled 2DSXL.

I know I want full functionality from the US system, I just want the UK shell design. That's why I've not used cfw.

Whenever I've had that issue is normally been one of the ribbon cables is not in correct.
Normally one that joins the top half to bottom.
Just make sure they are pushed in as far as possible and not at an angle, also correct way around.
Hope you sort it

Do something MUCH simpler then... Since it's a brand new UK system (even if you voided the warranty) and you probably have never accessed the eshop. Do a region change, there, then you get all functions of US one for a fraction of the work.

But if you want to do it this way, I guess try switching the screens as well and always touch a grounded metal with each hand for a couple seconds when handling electronics, the 3DS has a LOT of crystals surprisingly and those can get decalibrated or fried just by touching them while having even a tiny static charge in your fingers. You can try disassembling both system completely and reassembling without the shells swapping parts one by one around until you get them to work, THEN reassemble with the shells.
