I'm trying to figure out how to hook surround sound up to my Xbox. I have a black web 5.1 surround sound system. I'm trying to figure out the best way to hook it up, as there are multiple ways to do so. If I do it only through HDMI then HDR10 isn't supported.

Using the optical audio cable from my Xbox to the receiver, there is a delay from the sound system compared to what is coming out of the TV creating an echo. Running the optical cable from the TV to the receiver creates a similar problem. I have each speaker connected to a large pioneer speaker, which I already had, for a fuller sound. The sound is a bit too low so I decided to get a black web sound bar as well for some higher range.

I currently have the Xbox hooked into the sound bar and the TV hooked into the receiver but it too has a slight lag, so each sound is being repeated 3 times. After fiddling with some settings on the receiver I almost managed to get it synced up with the sound bar perfectly, but there is still some lag from what is being shown on screen.

Right now the best thing I can think of is to get an optical audio splitter and run it from the xbox to both the sound bar and the receiver. Anybody have a better idea of what I should do?

It's hard to visualize your sound setup. If you use a surround amplifier the tv's speakers should be muted. The sound bar should not be used, every speaker must be connected directly to the surround amplifier and, if the amplifier has a decent quality should have an automatic system to balance the level and the delay of each speaker.

Disabling the other speakers will eliminate the echo. If you want a different sound you can tweak the equalizer setting in the amplifier.

How many speaker you have connected to the amplifier? 5 + 1 subwoofer? The "large Pioneer speaker" you were talking about...I assume is one for each surround speaker, is just one for all 5 speaker or is one for each one of the frontal speakers? I suggest you to disconnect the small speaker and only use the pioneer one, at least for the frontal left+right channels. This should solve the problems with the "fuller sound".

Connect the xbox one with the hdmi to the amplifier. HDMI giver better quality over optical. If the amplifier doesn't have hdmi HDR pass-thru you have to choose between quality sound or HDR. As a workaround you can buy an hdmi splitter (HDR capable) so you can connect at the same time your TV/monitor and the amplifier.

Last, connect your TV with optical to the surround system so you can have surround from the TV channels, assuming they broadcast something with surround sound. Anyway the TV speakers are usually of worse quality than the surround speakers so make sense to use the surround ampifier also for TV.

The sound bar, with a 5.1 setup, is useless.
