So, to get it out of the way, I have a modded N2DS XL and as such, sending it in to Nintendo have the battery replaced is out of the question, as either A, they would refuse to service it or B, they would uninstall any mods to the console. That said, I'm itching to replace the battery, which AFAIK is the same as the one in the 3DS XL, but is not user removable. In my opinion, not making it user accessible was a dick move on their part, as batteries only have a finite charges and my XL's battery can't hold a charge for very long anymore. So, I know there are tutorials on YouTube, and the like, but is it something I should do on my own, or are there services that aren't Nintendo that can do it safely?

The only guides I've seen are places like this:

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/New+Nintendo+2DS+XL+Battery+Replacement/98065

Which requires special type of screwdriver, a spudger tool, pliers and yeah, it's something that worries me, I've had this for well over a year and a half, and I really don't want to have to send it in like I said. What advice/suggestions do you recommend I take to properly and safely replace this battery? Thank you.

Just follow the tutorial that u already mention in ur post. Ifixit web has the best tutorials for that kind of necessities. Buy the battery and follow the tutorial. The only hard part is when u have to unplug the cables from the motherboard, but if u look carefully that step, u will see that the two cables have in the top a litte connector for plug and unplug. I think it´s better if u just buy the battery and change it by youreself.

Do I need pliers to unplug those two cables going to the motherboard? I know they are fragile, I've never done this before, to be honest, I can only hope it's as easy as it says on those tutorials.

No, it can be removed with you´re hands if you just are not trembling handed... the pliers are for preventing... but if you organize the "operation desk", keep calm and put some relax music (as i always do jajajaja) you will have no problems.
Psdt: The step when warn you to be carefull removing the top case, it is for real, always put the 2ds reclining on a wall, so if you do something bad with the hands the case will stay sustained by the wall. Trust me, there so many consoles with a top case with plugged cables, and that is the better way to do it.

I'll watch some videos as well, to see how they do it. I still think it was stupid of Nintendo to make this a pain.

Just take your time and never use force. It is a relatively easy task. Using the triwing screws (again - like on older consoles) was a bad decision. Nintendo had easy battery access until the N2DSXL. Unfortunately non user replaceable batteries are more or less standard today and widely accepted by the consumers ("I replace my phone every two years. I don't care!)"

The N2DSXL is harmless compared to some phones which can take hours to even get to the battery.

And: as far as I know the N2DSXL has the CTR-003 battery - the same as in O3DS and O2DS not the bigger SPR-003 battery from the other XL models.

Yeah, I'm glad it uses a relatively standard battery, the O3DS one, and it looks relative simply, I just need to get the tools, and watch how others do it, mostly. See, I want to use my 2DS XL more, believe me, but the degradation of the capacity over time has turned me off from using it, I can't get long play sessions out of it anymore.

Yes you can look for some video as a complement, and only two steps are a pain:
1) removing the top case (not entirely as it has cables connected. If you wanna know the function of those cables, well, those gives instructions to the buttons of the 2ds, and most important, one of those gives to the power button the electricity to power on... that´s why the cables start in the motherboard, and end in the top case).
2) removing the cable to change the battery. This one is easiest, and in my opinion if you get success with the first one step, you can´t lose the batte with this one... you can´t! is not like you have to unplug the cables and then you see copper tips jajaja, you will see the little adapter to plug and unplug function.

The little thing that hi´s holding with tweezers, is the "little adapter to plug and unplug"... is not an epic final boss, is more like a koopa troopa jajaj.
