I dont know why people cant simply make sense of the situation - and why this threads have to always pop up to be answered time and tim again - but in the wake of the TX release - lets answer it again.

TX' cares not a single bit about -

- Emunand
- Not blowing efuses
- giving you any opportunity to get a software hack that doesnt require you to buy their dongle, or a smartphone - or a PC that runs the payload
- homebrew

(- if you are getting banned or not) Thats actually debatable, but by virtue of habit and their update policies, it s true as well

- And is still dongle dependent.

If all you ever cared about was piracy - and you dont mind walking into another DRMed ecosystem for that - by all means, do what they suggest, walk away from this community for good, and get all your help from maxconsole, or the xecuter website, or where ever they hold their cherrypick questions amas next. The likelyhood of this community supporting their aaproach over the long term is zero. But you are in it for piracy and undisclosed features - right? So leave.

They will not be the only act in town that will do piracy - and I hate to have to write this in this posting, but I strongly believe, that most people in here are what you would describe as "technologically illiterate leeches" that don't care about anything in the world, but their immediate pleasure. I'm sorry, that I didn't search for a less insulting way to convey this notion. But this is the most descriptive. Also I'm quoting another user here - so at least I didn't come up with it.

There have been lines drawn within this community - when an entire mob went on a ritual of extasy and fluffed each other on to buy stuff without knowing one bit about it. There have been lines drawn, when CFWs were DRMed, and there have been lines drawn, when distributors started spreading store links, before any information was released.

Now to a factual description of where we are at.

TX's solution. Hardware assisted only. DRMed. Encourages you to update your Switch to the most recent firmware. Has you use a dongle to coldboot into CFW, or boot - at all (if you installed "tools"). Doesnt care if you get online banned (high likelyhood if you installed tools), but maybe has a way around it, for people that are carfull and always willing to use both dongle and jig. Has the worst "compatibility" with homebrew, at least for some while - if the homebrew scene writes "better libraries" this might change.

Atmosphere. Hardware assisted, or launched via software ("lower is better" (or better <= 4.1.0 matters)). Counts on emunand, which means, that you can leave the Switch at low firmware to get softwarehacks in the future, and use a current CFW at the same time. Will have to use dongle and jig on higher firmwares. Will get softwarehacks on lower firmware. Doesnt trip efuses, doesnt rely on Nintendo for their update path. Doesn't have you update your Switch, before you get a current CFW. Not DRMed. May lack the "tools" portion (jig free launch, but you still need dongle) - for as long as it takes to reverse engineer TX' tools.

Both: Have the option of you updating your Switch to the most recent firmware - to play online (result being, you will always need at least the dongle in the future to run CFW - in that scenario. For a long, long time.. (Cant predict the far future)). Both can be operated without installing "tools" on the nand (if you go online with tools on your nand, Nintendo will ban you pretty quickly. Presumably.)

But - TX' update path will have you install a recent firmware first, through Nintendo, on your Switch - tripping efuses (issues with nand backups, no easy downgrade path (TX' say there is a potential downgrade path in their ecosystem only - with modified CFW - but that looks, and sounds horrible)), then tell you they can patch that firmware "on the fly in memory and on the system (?)" - unless they cant - because their patches dont work anymore on the next Nintendo firmware.

At which point, you cant update your Switch if you dont want to loose TX functionality - because, no emunand. Until they manage to get their patches to work on the next firmware.

Now that you know that, hype youreself up a bit more, buy whatever so you can have piracy - but don't expect any help in the future from anyone with a brain - if you go with the TX' OS solution (which isn't an OS; because they like to ride on false advertising also).

Have fun.

tldr; All the piracy crazed mob types will go with TX OS, but none of the more intelligent people will.

Also expect to got to different forums for support.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

thats fine with me
Thats idiotic.

Ruin Switch core functionality for great benefit, of using one dongle instead of two. Way to go. Cant wait, for those people to not be helped in here anymore - when they run into issues.

Heck, get a controller mod with a magnet gate to trigger pin 10 short, if you want the same functionality. Dont install a thing, that doesnt let the Switch boot without a dongle anymore... Would seem like common sense to me.

'A few more weeks of patience will save you many years of regret.' To quote a wise old man talking to you now.

Many will update because of TX, it works with any firmware. It's like Sky3DS, people just want an easy solution to play their backup. However, later on - CFW becomes easier to install (Luma3DS) so they throw away their Flashcart and installed CFW. Mostly because they can play eShop games. The problem here is: the firmware cannot be downgraded so you are stucked with whatever you've got, so it may become inconvenient for higher firmware when it comes to CFW.

If you really have the urge to update, do it. But if I were the mods, I'd ban every single one of you when the time comes and you'll complain about not getting the latest features. I'm staying on 3.0.2

So with all the new developments coming out soon and the release of the TX dongle/ Atmosphere coming out soon, we can just update our switches to the latest FW and update all our games and all that right?

As of 5/18/18, its safe to just update the switch to the latest version
5.0.2
(I am sitting on 3.0.1 and thinking there is not point in staying on it right?)

Thanks all!

Here's the deal, if you update your options are the following
1. Use a jig/paperclip/tx modchip to run homebrew
2. Wait for an eventual softmod

If you stay on 3.0.1 your options are
1. Wait for cfw

It's fully up to you but be warned if you update you won't have much to play with till stuff gets updated whereas everything basically works on 3.0.0 - 4.x.x and you should be able to access homebrew with the dns I think

Has TX confirmed as yet weather they are using sysNand or EmuNand? Or is it currently just speculation that they do not have emunand?

@notimp You obviously still know nothing about the topic. Stop posting like you do. Efuses being blown is a none issue, since downgrading in theory have no use if the cfw can do everything on a newer firmware. Do you think people still run 9.2 on 3DS or upgrade to the latest because Luma3DS can run on it?
They're a business, they need to earn money. Don't buy it if you don't like it. Just like the Gateway on the 3DS.

Right now you're being over toxic and one of GBAtemp's biggest sponsors sell flashcarts etc. So give up your crusade.
And as you said in your post, please leave.

Do NOT update. Lower is ALWAYS better.

There may be a way to install CFW without needing RCM.
I don't think you know what "ALWAYS" means. No it isn't, case in point: the OP would like to update his games. There are good updates for many switch games, so if it doesn't hinder your ability to run homebrew, lower is definitely NOT better. Then there's the seed crypto on 3ds. It's either pain yourself with decrypting everything before installing it, or finding cryptofixed versions to download... or simply update your console so you can visit the e-shop or import the seed with FBI (which wouldn't happen on a firmware lower than 9.6). The only drawback right now, is that most homebrew works best on 3.0. That'll change soon enough. As for the hard mod... no, I'm certain that is also temporary. This exploit allows us do do pretty much the same thing as B9S. That's how this upcoming commercial dongle works.

TL;DR

If the exploit in use is a bootrom exploit of any sort (and can't be fixed/patched) then lower is not better in all cases.

If you don't want to use a dongle and opt for the softmod-only option, or if you have a 1.0 console and coldboot to CFW, lower IS better. Atmosphere is also offering emuNAND for game updates. Case in point.

What if the Switch had an OTP-like situation like the 3DS had? Lack of eFuses allowed us to downgrade that console to get the needed OTP.bin, but with the Switch there's no such luck this time around. Lower is always better, for all consoles.

No, this is still exactly true. A hardmod is a hardmod, which some people may see as an inconvenience to have to use. 1.0 won't require a hardmod at all and the others (higher than 1.0 and lower than 5.0) will see softmod. Upgrading to 5.0 at this point in time will require a hardmod for an undetermined amount of time. We know for fact 4.1 and lower will receive softmod within the next year.

Not to mention that we don't know if the SX NAND modification is detectable by Nintendo to cause a ban. Still best practice not to modify your system NAND at all.

Well, if SX hardmods weren't out of stock for preorder, I would've gotten on. So yeah, I'm SOL. Too bad they'll never be a softmod on 4.x.x.

You still don't understand the significance of the tegra exploit. It's the same as ntrboot for all intents and purposes. It won't be long before a dongle isn't needed either, just like there's already a way without a jig or hardmod.

There are exploits to allow softmod on 4.XX, they are waiting for Markio chips to ship to see if they still apply before releasing.

I'm not holding my breath, part of me says 4.x.x are completely SOL and have to pay for modchips to get any kind of homebrew on said firmware. *sigh*

How can you be so certain?

Shhhh, don't bring logic into this. Some people think a coldboot isn't coming.

I understand it's basically god-mode access, but I still stand my ground. 3DS went for years without an exploit between 4.5 and 9.0. I'd rather have easy access to dongle-less support sooner than later on an earlier firmware.

For what its worth, the entire bootrom of the Switch is open to the public so some people can go looking for, if not already, an exploit that is softmodded/untethered. Its basically a waiting game at this point. Heck, maybe someone found it already and is waiting for the Mariko Switches to come out to troll Nintendo a little bit. Also...

Saved for future reference :P I'm gonna assume you also meant that we won't have a softmod of loading homebrew on the higher firmwares as we can already do so on 4.x and even 5.x with the heavily unstable Hekate.
