Sea of Thieves becomes Microsoft's "fastest-selling" IP of the generation

Skeleton-Fort_1-hero.png

Rare's latest game appears to be a massive success, according to Microsoft, as Sea of Thieves has become the company's fastest selling new IP of the Xbox One generation, and the #1 first party game on Windows 10. The game managed to get over one million players on the day it launched, which actually caused huge server issues for many players, but once resolved, the game shot up to two million players by the end of the week. This game marked the first instance of a Microsoft game being playable on launch through the Game Pass service, where players can rent a library of games for $10 a month. Sea of Thieves also managed to top the sales charts for the UK on the week it released, outselling games like Ni No Kuni 2 and A Way Out.

This game is garbage. Deleted the game after 2 hours of playing. Fucking empty. It is so stupid that they are bragging their 1 million players. Free pass = 1 million players. What do you expect?

It helps if you play with some friends. You should really give it more credit.

Sunset overdrive is still the best xbox one exclusive.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

"I've heard this guy, who played for a few minutes and he said it was boring. Me? Play the game? Nah I just want to hate on it".

Lack of progression in a game never seemed to be a problem here on the temp. I even recall an article praising the Uncharted series, which is pretty linear and has no progression at all. And this one is a pvp focused game, its basically about getting a crew together, doing ship battles and pvp and stealing other players.

That being said, a progression system would leave it unbalanced.

The lack of progression and purely cosmetic stuff never seemed to be a problem for overwatch as well.
Before I even read the comment you wrote I already know where it's going lol, you are far too predictable.

Uncharted is a single player action game, somehow you compare it to Seas of thieves mental gymnastics like crazy.

I don't see a problem to this comparison tbh raises a valid point.

where is the comparison? one is a single player story focused game one is a multiplayer PVP focused game?

one of the best games of gen compared to one of the worst games of gen

but ok

Let me do a break down.

"I've heard this guy, who played for a few minutes and he said it was boring. Me? Play the game? Nah I just want to hate on it".
  1. Lack of progression in a game never seemed to be a problem here on the temp.
  2. And this one is a pvp focused game (not Progression focused), its basically about getting a crew together, doing ship battles and pvp and stealing other players.
  3. That being said, a progression system would leave it unbalanced. (and this all day long)

does any one ever remember Unreal Tournament 1 ? there was no progression there and it was a super fun game. How about Street Fighter II/III Alpha etc... ? Again no progression and super fun. Starcraft, AOE the list go's on.....
As I recall it was COD modern warfare that introduced, or at least made progression fun and popular, but now devs have just turned that system into a cash cow, which is nearly always unbalanced in the sense that you either grind and lose interest, Turn into an addict, or pay loads of real money or both the last 2 (hence why the whole gambling thing is mentioned, even brought up in parliament) to make yourself overpowered thus making it unbearable for new players.
So I think sea of thieves is a breath of fresh air and extremely fun to play.
I'm honestly gutted that I don't have an xbox solely for this game, I hate Microsoft and vowed never to buy one of their consoles ever again, but my gripes aside this game is really fun and I'm really really jelly, Games should be fun and enjoyed with others and this is a perfect example. I get not everyone will like it but "it does what it says on the tin"

Like I said Sunset Overdrive is the best Xbox exclusive game still, I bought SOT on launch day and I hate it.

Waste of money, too each their own I guess.

I got my hopes up. I thought "could rare function without it's alumni?"
the answer, is they can't. this game is no man's sky levels of empty from what i heard.

It would be nice to hear negative opinions from people who have actually played the game rather than "Heard"

What I don't understand is why do we need progression ? Everything is a damn RPG now and you have to pay to level up ? I just don't get that personally (from a gamers perspective, I totally get it from a devs perspective) This Is why I have much more respect for devs like Naughty Dog, Insomniac and Santa Monica they want you to game and not gamble.

I'm loving it anyway! :P I've got it currently set up for all 4 members of the family - 3 PCs, one Xbone, and we've played every day (that we could!) since launch, and it's fantastic fun! Not had this much fun as a family in gaming since the lads got old enough to play Pokemon (10 years ago that), but I can understand my setup is pretty uncommon, and most gamers are probably stuck to playing alone, or maybe with one mate they've added on Live, on the sloop.... neither option is anywhere near as fun as the 4 player setup I currently have.
Next week though, the 2 week game pass trials that the lads have been using runs out, and despite the fun we've been having, it's probably not worth spending an extra £16 per month on, so we'll be down to 1 PC and 1 Xbone only... make of that what you will.
Basically, running the galleon, with 4 of yous, it's excellent fun, and there's been moments we'll all look back and laugh about, so it's provided great memories, so it annoys me reading all these posts slagging off, but I can see this game is clearly not for everyone, and yes it's shortlived fun.
I had fun for a while, too. Played in a party of four with my brother and some buddies. Sailing and micromanaging the ship is pretty entertaining (albeit I think the 4-man Galleon is somewhat over-complicated; a 2-player party in a sloop can sail circles around you as you're awkwardly fumbling with the three sails while running belowdeck to stock cannons). But after a while, you realize all there is to do is three boring quests and battling others. It gets boring very quickly. That's its fault. There's a good foundation here, but very little meaningful content on top.

Its a fun game, its just that you need to have friends who play or talk to randoms who play it. I did a gamepass free trial but honestly this game isnt worth 60, its more of a 30 dollar game. Honestly...for what it offers now a 20 dollar game. But it is very fun.

Surprises me everyone is taken aback by this.

As a XB1 owner, Xbox fans are hungry for something....anything on the system, so it's not a shock to see this doing well even though it's thoroughly devoid of content (or fun).

I said in the past MS should have never killed Scalebound, it would have sold well, this pretty much shows that. Crackdown & State of Decay will do well for them as well, considering that's about all that's coming this year (barring any new announcements from E3 this year). So we'll see.

This is the same bull I heard when monster hunter world sold well on xbox, same as PUBG, I am sure you will say the same about far cry 5. Also to say the game is devoid of fun is bullcrap, the game is very fun, even the negative reviews all say its fun but there is not enough content. Lol @ all the people here crapping on the game who haven't played it or don't even own an xbox. One thing to give your opinion but for the ponies that post 10 times in a thread about a game they never played for a console they dont own, get a life.

What does owning the game have to do with anything? Many people talk about games they don't own. I haven't played Mario Odyssey, I heard it was good and now I want to buy a Switch for it. I talk about others liking the game. Is this bad? Many people like Mario Odyssey and Many people don't like Sea of Thieves. Am I wrong in saying this? Isn't this true though? So it wouldn't be wrong of me for saying it. Theres a difference between sharing an opinion and talking about what others think.

And the get a life part doesn't make sense. Why is it only when someone criticizes something they get accused of having no life? This doesn't happen to people that say great things about something. There's no consistency in this. So if someone makes posts praising something you also have to accuse them of having no life. They have no life for spending time praising something. Just like the people that spend time criticizing something that to you have no life. If you don't then you're a hypocrite.
