I want the internet to work. What about downloading new games, posting to social media, and watching Hulu?

Besides, the child, or any adult they ask, can just add another internet connection.
If you want to download new games then you will need to update each time anyway.

Either blacklist the device (MAC filtering), removing all WiFi settings on the console?

That would block the entire internet, not just updating. Even if you didn't care about that, MAC filtering would only work at your house. There's nothing stopping the child or anyone the child asks to add a new internet connection. It's quite possible some adult in the child's life would want to add an internet connection at their house and buy Pokemon or something.

Only until the update comes out, which could be months away. I don't want to block updates until an actual update comes out. But since that's too risky, you suggest blocking all internet for weeks to months beforehand.

The correct solution would be for them to lock updates behind parental controls. In the early days of the Wii U, you needed the PIN to update, but then they took that away.

Meh, still only care about emulators mostly.

So according to you, it's OK to pirate, as long as you wait 20 years first. Yea, that's so much better Some of us want the new games now, not to be emulated in 20 years.

You won't know it's coming until it comes, so yes if you don't want to update you need to remove it from the internet. Mine was updated to 3.0 by my daughter who is 3. She just loves clicking pop up boxes.

Why would they put updates behind parental controls.. they want you to update. Accidentally or not.

That's not my problem, is it?

Userland is better than nothing. Guess I'm staying on 4.1 at this point. Still, once games require a higher firmware, it's gonna suck. Hopefully Dark Souls Remaster will be up and running for a while after release before 4.1 gets updated, otherwise I plan to keep my Switch completely offline. Is firmware spoofing kernel or could it be done in userland? Also, nvhax could see a potential release if it gets patched, correct?

Userland gives you fairly limited access, it can run some homebrew that doesn't require kernel/full OS control. You'd also be tethered most likely, have issues with sleep, need extensive patching work to run backups (or it just won't work), and emulation access, and other neat but somewhat superfluous tricks. Even kernel doesn't give you everything since TZ controls critical functions like Sleep/Wake, but Kernel at least gives you full OS control for the system.

I doubt they will release nvhax for a long time regardless, its a research tool not something being currently developed for public use. And even if parts of it are patched or efficacy drops, it could be partial and remain as a valuable weakness to keep in the pocket for a long time.

nVidia's backdooring has been a real boon but Nintendo's been mitigating it wherever and everywhere they can, that's why the devs are being careful with releases. Eventually you run out of nVidia's problems and run headfirst into the brick wall that is Nintendo's microkernel and hardened trustzone.

5 minutes of google and you could have found out that you can stop the updates with a custom DNS Server in the switch config.
