You can't use decrypt9 to convert a 3ds to a cia, only cart to cia.
Really? Seems strange it has the ability to dump carts as .3ds and .cia (which would require converting) but can't convert .3ds to .cia.
I know an old way that involves using a 4.x console and generating xorpads etc but I'm sure there has to be a more up to date way nowadays.

I think so - I'll test for you when I get home tonight (don't have my 3ds with me). Or you can poke about in Decrypt9's options.
Well, I looked into decrypt9, the closest option I found is NCCH/NCSD to CIA Converter.
It will work to convert .3ds to .cia?

@ih8ih8sn0w said Decrypt9 can't do it sorry :-( Are you sure you can't download it from freeShop/CIAngel/FunkeyCIA? Unless it's an obscure game it should be there.

get a decrypted .3ds (or xorpads) and use 3ds simple cia converter 4.3. This method is probably ancient, but it works.

Decrypt9 can convert .3ds to .cia, I've done it before. It is the NCCH/NCSD method in Decrypt9.

From Decrypt9's Github page: "NCCH/NCSD to CIA Converter: This allows you to convert any NCCH/NCSD file to an installable (on a signature patched system) CIA file. The CIA file will be written to filename.ext.cia."

Aren't ncch/ncsd files different from 3ds files?

Hi. I have converted my Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask cartridge into a CIA. When I play from the original cartridge, it says "Ver 1.1" in the bottom-right corner. It said from the first time that I inserted the cartridge, without me having to install any update from eShop (and indeed, I have no "Add-on data" for that game), so v1.1 is "burnt" into the original cartridge.

After converting it to CIA (which I did using Decrypt9WIP and installed using FBI, onto the same console, with is an o3DS XL running A9LH/sysnand 11/Luma), when I select the icon, I see a message "Software notification - connect to the internet and touch Open to start updating". If I start the game without updating, it still says it's v1.1. If I do the update (which puts stuff into Add-on data), it still says it's v1.1.

My questions are: Why does converting the cartridge version to a CIA and installing it seem to act different (requesting an update) to the original cartridge? Did I convert it wrongly? Does this happen with any other games? Should I or should I not install the update? I have done so because it gets rid of the annoying prompt, but I don't know how that affects the game. Is it possible to remove that prompt without updating?

the "version number" in the cartridge doesn't carry over to the CIA (we don't know how to do it properly yet I think), so the home menu will still see it as outdated. having the update data won't affect anything.

Thanks. In that case I'll install the update to get rid of the prompt.

Just follow the guide and you'll be fine :-) Well, maybe use JKSM to backup all your saves before you start, in case you need to do it later and forget. Ask if you don't understand anything, we're all happy to help you!
