It is if you want to use themehax or if you don't want to have to install your cias on both nands everytime. If it really bother yoi that much, just restore th nand backup you made before formatting it.
Hello guys ! I just got a o3DS XL in 7.1E firmware, and full of courage I wanted to install RxTools on it.. Btw, you'll guess that if I am here I got a problem trough the process...
Here what i've done so far:
-Followed the tutorial several times, and everytime I use the browser in order to boot on rxtools it gaves me an error.. I deleted the cookies and history but it has never solved the problem.. After formating both 3ds and sd card and trying again, it fails a this step.. And I'm sure I've put all the needed files (firmware.bin generated on my own, rxtools folders..) on the sd card.. Even the key.bin, which I guess is not even needed cause I'm in 7.1..
-After all, I tried to use the 2.6 rxtools files, and managed to get the black menu, and there I could have installed the fbi app on emunand.. Next problem is that i can't boot rxmod in emunand.. (FORMATED EMUNAND WITH LATEST GW LAUNCHER)... I unliked nand with last hope and redid the whole process, but with no success..
I need your help, i don't know where I fucked up..

Updating to 9.2 instead of downgrading is a better option :
- Inject FBI into your sysnand
- Use it to install sysupdater on your sysnand (destination sd)
- Switch to rxTools 2.5.2 (the 2.6 version doesn't have devmode)

I've read alot about sysuptader test which gone really bad.. With all the things I've tried I'm quite afraid failing it and bricking my ds.. But I'll grow balls and check this out, thanks again for the answers

- Back up NAND and save safely on PC.
- Use sysupdater for update. Avoid v0.4b sysupdater though.
- Update with firmlaunch disabled in Pasta or Use rxTools Devmode or Use PBT
- Download the correct firmware package. Double-check for correct region & correct model (O3DS or N3DS)
- Don't lose power when updating: Make sure have good charge. Best update with a charger plugged in. Don't touch during flashing process with sysupdater.

could you please tell how can i change the rxtools version(in my case i have an unofficial rxtools with signature patched and iwant to have the 2.6 version)? do i just need to put the firm.bin and rxtool.dat on the root of my sdcard?
or must i do something else?
and also the emunand i updated using the previous rxtool version will remain the same isn't it? with the same game, App ect...

You are better off using the latest nightly from Oct 02, 2015 as 2.6 is outdated.
in my case, what I did when I was switching around versions (I was switching between rxtools 2.5.2 and rxtools 2.6) I deleted the rxtools folder, rxtools.dat, slot0x25key, and firmware bin from my sd card(make backups of them just in case) and replaced them with the ones from the newer build
your emunand will be fine and the same as
but like ccfman said, if you want to be on the latest version of rxtools i would use the nightly builds
ok but how do i do that? do i just replace my rxtool.dat with the nightly one? or do i need to do something else?

I have searched around but never found anything about this, which pertains all CFWs in general... Why does none of them allow an user to launch .3ds files, or use the gamecard slot icon for that matter? I assumed it was due to the fact maybe the 3DS actually needs to interact with a physical cart (with its own memory chip?) to allow for gamecard simulation but... Considering the 3ds has been already blown open, why isn't this possible?
First, the 3DS hasn't been blown open. We're far better than how we were maybe 1 year or 6 months ago but there's still plenty of stuff that can't be done and to which we don't have access yet.
Second, CFWs devs haven't been able yet to find a way to redirect the cartridge reader in order to read from the SD card slot instead. So for that reason, .3ds files can't be used.
Current CFWs(actually not really custom) patch *just* signature checks to let us play backup games.
Well, some additional patches are done to run games on lower firms, but emulating cartridge is a whole nother story.
