They might just be recommending people to upgrade to the latest firmware while they can. The fact that they're recommending that people using 4.x firmware stay on that firmware would suggest that the support for higher firmwares is more limited. And it's just too big of a coincidence that they make a major breakthrough within days of Sky3DS being released.

But lets wait and see.

Actually, GW has been hinting at this for a couple of months now. They have repeatedly mentiond "something up our sleeves" and "big guns". Maybe I'm just naive or an optomist? I believe they had this already planned. Either way, it certainly cements their position as top dog in the realm of the 3DS. So very glad I chose them as my 3DS solution.

I think the fact that Nintendo elected to make an entirely separate model of handheld with the main gimmick removed speaks for it not being universally popular with consumers.
Figured that was done just to make the unit cheaper to buy.

No that was done because they were sued and lost over copyright infringment, something to do with the use of the 3D technology and so they have to pay something like 1.82% of all 3DS sales to the person who sued them, hence they made the 2DS to not have to pay anything to him from them sales.

I love the 3D, i ALWAYS use it, just because others don't, doesn't mean they're right or wrong, and to state something like it's a gimmick and nobody uses it is unfounded and stupid, because I use it, and I doubt im alone.

Actually, I'd suggest the fact they've just released TWO new versions of the console with the 3D improved would tend to indicate it is universally popular with consumers going off your logic.

That, and also because they wanted to cater to parents who didn't want to buy 3DS for fear of the stereoscopic 3d harming their children's eyes.

I always use it, too. The 3DS graphics look too plain without the 3d.

I know the sky3ds only needs a single card to boot up and load games, will gateway always need the blue card?

Actually one of the cards is gateway, the other one is some cheap rebranded nds flashcard you use for loading an exploit.

You launch exploit before installing gateway and every time after you play nds games.
Personally i moved all my nds games on it along with exploit so i can launch it once i'm done playing game.
Then again i haven't played nds games since i've got gateway so i didn't use it aside from first time i was installing gateway.

Some people use 3D, some don't. It's that simple.

I don't because I'm short sighted so the angles play havok with my eyes.

First of all, I don't think that the 9.x gateway will have all of the features like the 4.5 exploits because of this quote
" If you are on native System Firmare 4.5, then please stay at this version."
That alone makes me think that the 9.x will not have homebrew, region free , and things like that. It may only be able to run games like the sky3ds, without the 10 game limit.
Lets leave assumptions on the side for a moment.

What will happen if a lot of Gateway users would update to 9.2 now?
Gateway will get flooded with "Is the update happening soon?" / "Do you have a date yet?!?" or "I updated to 9.2 because you said it'd be compatible, can I have the update now?"

Basicly, "If its not broken, don't fix it."
There is no reason for a 4.x user to update right now, since their stuff already works.

Thats a fact, no speculation needed.
Anything beyond that is rife with assumptions though.
And can pretty much go every possible direction.

Okay, I'd like to address one thing, the reason why Gateway team tells us to not update if we have 4.5.
There are various logical reasons that aren't necessarily "because newer firmware will have less features". While I'm not denying that might happen, please stop.

First and most obvious reason is the time between two events. Let's say someone who owns a 4.5 3DS updates, and... nothing. He can't really use his Gateway until the update is release.
Second reason is also quite logical. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", they say. If Gateway team didn't find any more advantages for 4.5 users to upgrade, why tell them to? Furthermore, if they did find some reason for people to update, they can make it an option on Gateway.
I had one more, but I forgot what it was. Nonetheless, you get the point.

Gateway is hacking the planet one 3DS at a time. Here's to continued support of the the little card that helped make the homebrew scene thrive.
