DS mode cart?
So the blue cart then? Hmm... that is a unforeseen bug...
So whenever, if ever, you run the blue cart with DS roms on it, the 3DS "repairs" the "NDS Profile" so that you have to run the installer on the stock FW to be able to run 3DS roms again?
Damn... Well, I'll only use DS roms with a emulator for PC then... Seems more logical :P

Okay, First post here on the forums guys!

I wanted to see if I could get a fairly universal answer. I've been doing some research and haven't really found a straightforward "This is what you need to do" option.

I just bought a black/black 3DS XL. I'm not too worried about home brew specifically, All I really want to do is have the ability to play GBA/GameBoy/NES games on my 3DS XL. Ideally with out having to use a flashcart (If that's even possible? SDcard?).

Some quick Info about my 3DS XL: Software Ver - 7.1.0-15EU S/N-SW40160****

Suggestions, "How To" thread links, resources on how to do this? Again all I'm really wanting to do is play GBA/GameBoy/NES games on my 3DS XL

I made a post about this ;)
here you go: [PRESS ME]
It is what I had to do. Just follow the video on gateway's Download page, and add with what I warn about and add to.
Should be golden. Using mine with no problem ;) (I did this yesterday...)

well, the installer (Gateway.nds IIRC) does run from any DS flashcart (so also when running the modified DSmenu.dat). So just keep it on there together with the other nds files you like to run and just remember to rerun it before you want to use the 3DS stuff in order to "break" the DS profile again. :)

you would have to buy a DS flashcart like DSTWO and then use an emulator plugin from their official website or from here http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/DSTwo_Plugin_Emulators
Im afraid, there is no other solution, you cant just install and play any emulators and play everything for free on your 3ds without any flashcard ^^

Awesome, Thanks. I had gotten to the point of realizing / deciding that the DSTWO is the way to go, Nice to have that emulator plugin list though.

Would this thread apply to what I'm attempting to do? If not do you suggest another resource for a "How to" kind of thing? I've always rooted my androids and I soft-modded my wii but I'm 100% new to DS modding!

Have you done this personally? Because if I have the modified dsmenu.dat, the GW installer wont finish. I need to put the GW blue card's original dsmenu.dat in there. Either that or I've been incredibly unlucky getting 3 freezes in a row during installation attempts for unrelated reasons.

Not sure if games will prompt you to update your firmware or you can only do it manually, but it wont be without a warning prompt and a confirmation message, I'm guessing. Just make sure you never update the 3DS. To be sure just turn the wireless slider off for the time being.
BD is playable even on 1.2, zelda is playable on 2b02 (only one I tested, not sure about the other versions), mario party I don't know but it requires the same firmware as zelda so it is playable in a way or another.

Emunand does not increase the compatibility with ROMS, the only thing it does is allow you to go online and use online features while maintaining your real firmware version non-updated.

What will emunand let you do: play some online games(it depends on updates they receive), use apps and e-shop, in general, anything online-related on the 3DS.

Currently, as far as ROMS go, pokemon and animal crossing are not playable yet. But they will, "soon".

Just tested it again (after i spent 5 minutes cursing at the forums own internal search before using google): copied the 1.62 _dsmenu.dat to the microSD (just in case i switched back to the official), did a system reset format on the 3DS, installed the gateway ds profile exploit, executed it, emunand booted.

So you most likely really did hit an unlucky spell then

Is it normal that 3DS battery is empty after 1.5 hours of playing Gateway?
Yeah, sounds about right when you use brightness five, have wlan on, 3D on, and energy saving off on a regular 3DS.

edit: brightness 1, energy saving on, wlan off, 3d off should give you about 4 and a half hours.

Is there anyway to play Zelda LBW on r4i safely at the moment? I'm on 3.3b

Ta

Yes, If you can track down the version equivilent to GW's 2.0b1. I believe it is 3.0.

This version has emuNAND, which once updated to 6.3.0 can be used to play ALBW, although crashing will be common and you will have to deal with bugs involving save loss. There is a workaround to mostly negate the save problem. Open game, save, close. If it doesn't crash, it wont crash next time you try to save.

It was my understanding that some games were made with updated SDK versions that don't work with older firmwares, so yes EmuNAND does increase compatability.

I thought it was potentially risky to use 3.o on r4? When you say update my emunand is this neccessary? I did have a different version of the loader when I first got my r4i and ZLBW worked fine without messing with emunand.

Thanks for the answers, do the games contain the update within itself, meaning will it update without a wifi connection? Or will it simply not let me play the game? Seems more likely that the update is contained in the game.

The game will have an update on it, and you can't get past the "update required" screen.
