Actually most (nearing all) of the older systems didn't use encryption at all. GB/ GBC, Genesis, SNES, 64, etc. None of them bothered with encryption because the fact that shit was on carts (and no USB ports, etc.) was enough to make piracy too expensive for many people to bother with.

Exactly, and other newer consoles (e.g. PS3, Xbox 360) are too powerful to emulate well with current computers. The ones that aren't (e.g. Wii) have had the common key found. But just because it was found for the Wii does not mean it can be found for the 3DS; there was a flaw in the Wii's security which allowed obtaining the common key.

Anyway, making a 3DS emulator is useless for pretty much everyone but pirates. It doesn't help the cause of 3DS homebrew at all.

Also, metroid0: There is no need to centre all your posts and include a picture in them. It's a tad annoying.

I actually find it cool.

But anyways, thanks for sharing the info, didn't knew older games didn't use encryption. This whole encryption thing gets really annoying for us that only want to use homebrew(I like the feeling of new cartridge games)...
Nintendo should consider making a homebrew section, free for download, but testing to see if there's any security flaws being exploited by the apps. Wouldn't that be amazing?
I'm only worried about emulators, since we have no way to prove we have the actual game and want to put it on the 3DS...

And also, they should make a way to transfer our 3DS cartridge games to the console, since they already have downloadable titles on the eShop. What do you guys think?
(Yes, that may open a way for us to trick security...)

It's that I need to eject and insert in two devices (computer and DS)each time I need to test a build.
This is getting off-topic quickly, but if you have a wifi connection on your DS (unlikely these days I guess with only WEP support), you can use dsload [http://davejmurphy.com/dsi-mode-homebrew-anyone/] to load apps over WiFi without having to do any SD card transfer. Still not as quick as loading in an emulator, but I always much prefer running stuff on the actual device than an emulator.

LOL. Hey, we can do the celtic chant genitalia rubbing thing, it might work. Who knows? ;)
Hah!

All jokes aside though your post has some truth, amidst the 1001 posts of "HEY GUYS WHAT IF I PUT R4 IN THE SD SLOT WILL IT WORK??" we do get some genuine thought provoking ones.

Who knows, hopefully one day we'll see one wild idea turn out to be the right idea!

Exactly. Since I'm not patient to learn programming atm(I'm already loaded up with college stuff), I would try random keys to the encryption, maybe we could hit a jackpot, like Metoroid0 said.

I know chances are REALLY small, but hey, it's kind of a lottery ticket...

I know,i'm not pessimist,i'm realist. You have the same chance to get it right than find out the secret of immortality. But i f you really want to try to bruteforce it,go ahead. Its better than doing nothing.Just report it somewhere so if other want to try too, they will not repeat what you made.

The problem I see in bruteforce, at least in the programs I've seen so far, is they go one by one. Instead, I'd use bruteforce randomly, while saving a log so that I can send to many other users not to repeat them and try the other ones...

We shall succeed one day.

When my explanation said "unique", that's what it meant. :P Even keeping track of them all and assuming every single person tries one, you can 500 friends trying 50,000 keys a second would have a 0.0000000000000000000002% chance after an entire nonstop year of trying numbers.

That's why this type of encryption/signing stuff is used by the government, because simple guessing, even in mass amounts, won't break it. It's often down to implementation flaws, or getting stuff on the system via things that aren't checked.

And now i want it hacked for a city mod hack in AC:NL.

Maybe...Someone should be employed in Nintendo and find at least the common key and leak it.Otherwise, wait for an un/mischecked app to come loose in eShop and leak the key.I don't see any other ways.

Edit: Or a flawed update, just tought of that (like 3.55 for PS3)
