tl:;dr version: DM(L) didn't work on my Wii when I had my broken drive installed. It wouldn't read controller inputs. Only when temporarily replacing my DVD drive did DM work. However, when my broken drive is installed, DM doesn't work. Any ideas of what can be done?

Long version:
For about a year now, my Wii's DVD drive was broken. After the advent of DM(L) and Devolution, I was excited to finally be able to play my GameCube collection again. Unfortunately, Devolution's anti-piracy locked me out and DM(L) would load games, but would not read my controller inputs. Not having controller inputs is a known problem, and numerous sources said to try loading a Gamecube game normally to fix the problem.

Recently, a friend let me borrow his Wii, and he gave me permission to swap DVD drives. Before loading up a Gamecube game normally through the Wii menu, I tried loading via DM and it worked perfectly. I tried loading a game normally via the Wii menu, and it again worked.

Next, I put my original Wii drive in and loaded DM, but the games stopped working again.

I'm posting this to see if anyone else experienced this problem. This is also just in case it's an unknown bug or if someone else has the same problem. I guess in the meantime, I'll just verify my games with Devolution while I still have my friend's Wii on hand.

Thanks.

I should note that it also doesn't work with no DVD drive present. It hangs at the DM loader screen in that scenario.

I have a Wii that I've modded with a "partial" DVD drive; i.e. I've removed the controller PCB from the drive, reinstalled that PCB, and removed only the broken drive itself. This of course gave me room to install a 2.5" hard drive ;)

Long story short, I have DML working on said Wii, with a 16gb SDHC card, so I know that it is in theory possible. What DM(L) revision are you using?

This subject is coming back every few months.
Best solution is to make "drive present" hack using some cheap AVR.
Problem is that I cannot find such one.

(Sorry for the long delay. I came back because I found out about the F-Zero AX cheat.)

Sadly, that didn't work for me. I used every revision since 2.4, as well as 2.2.

Perhaps it could be a problem with my controller PCB? (I kind of doubt this, though.)

What's the effect of applying the No-Disc patch with the broken drive connected?

No-Disc has no effect on DM(L) 2.2+. For fun, I downloaded 2.2 anyway, and it didn't work.
