Actually I have not thought about it. I just looked at some FPGAs and thought it may be possible to make a handheld console for emulation only and than I thought about what the people would pay for it if it ever got build.
Errr, I trust your judgment, ichichfly (especially as a developer), but a FPGA would mean only one thing: emulation cores for ALL the devices you speak of. While you can load them at boot, requiring as a maximum space only the amount for the bigger one of the lot, it's still a problem.

As you may know, people are STILL trying to implement FAR easier cpus in VHDL/Verilog (68020, for example) than the ones you speak of, and they've been worked on for years.

There's around a fairly stable reimplementation of the Amiga 500, of the Commodore 64 and few other (old) home computers.

Then we get to the main problem: FPGA space. Smaller FPGAs cost decent amounts, bigger ones (required for more modern projects) cost LOTS of bucks. Advanced units also go for $4000-5000, and I'm sure there are some that cost even more.

Creating a PS2 core for FPGA would probably require 3-4 of the most expensive FPGAs around - so a device like that would cost around $20000.

Well, also don't forget that you'd need someone to WRITE that much code. Which would probably take ages, since they're really complicated architectures.

Talking of feasible FPGA projects: http://www.fpgaarcade.com/

It can "emulate" an host of platforms, which roughly shows that economical FPGAs should reach SNES at best, when it comes to capacity.

I know but I just thought what if...

add: It was an FPGA with an inbuilt CPU advertised with a speed of 800 MHz (arm instruction)

Well, that could help as it could off-load some of the FPGA of the less powerful chips... but I'm not sure.

It'd be a lot more feasible to invest time in the new octa-core Exynos which are coming out. Highly optimized ARM emulators (assembly anyone) could be possible for PS2 and GC on that.

And they'd cost HEAPS less! :P

Yes holding a monitor, mouse, keyboard and a gaming pc with emulators with 2 hands while still playing them is possible.
It is, it's called a laptop with a GPU.
(Really, I can play all of those emulators well on my laptop.)
Human cloning is illegal Bro. Don't make this into an argument over ethical issues.
Last time I checked, animal cloning is legal. So, the question still stands, would you clone yourself a thousand times?

What you're telling me is that you can walk around holding a laptop in one hand while playing PSX games.
Please post a video.
Please.
Two hands, you don't play a 3DS with one hand, do you?
Also, controllers do wonders, hold the laptop with your elbows, play with your hands. Finally, you walk around playing on a handheld? Do you want to bump into something?

It would be hard to hold a laptop with both hands and then continue to play.
Holding a laptop with your elbows I guarantee you drop it eventually.
Again please post a video.
Walking around playing a handheld isn't hard.
