There's no guarantee they would release results of any progress made towards hacking. They're just considering releasing the SEM images to donors, which I doubt most will know what to do with (which is why they're probably only considering it). I certainly doubt they'd release keys, if they found any.
Like I said "Obviously inside technical details may not be released straight away"; by that I meant stuff like keys and the contents of the mask ROM. Those things will be used by them to further reverse engineer the system. If that were to lead to some user friendly way of running homebrew code on the 3DS, I feel confident they would release said method, once it was polished enough for the general public.

What part of this violates the acceptable use policy? Is fundraising not allowed on Paypal or something?
The official fundraising site on 3dbrew explicitly stated the purpose of decapping was to hack the 3ds and circumvent its security. So that was probably enough for Nintendo to complain to paypal and freeze the account. It doesn't take too much arm-twisting evidently.

Like stated earlier, Reverse Engineering is not illegal. Due to its legitimate purposes, Nintendo wouldn't have the right. If they did, and people got proof they did twist paypals "arm", then im pretty sure things could get ugly. Please somebody correct if im wrong, lol.

It's not whether decapping is illegal or not, it's whether Paypal determines the account violated its self-contrived acceptable use policy. And they determined it did. Game over. (Just ask the flashcart biz if PayPal isn't serious when they say 'Game Over')

There will have to be a plan B to raise the money. There's still hope if the scene is persistent enough.

Well they already have since Anonymous hacked Paypal yesterday. I think it was for some other reason though :P

why not try something like kickstarter... that one might actually work.

Remember the Cheetahmen II: Lost Levels? Coming from ex-AVGN fan. This may cause problems if we attempt to start The 3DS Decapping fundraiser on dat site. I was once going to start something on Kickstarter but decided not to! I mean, Kickstarter = Great site for promoting projects, but due to the Cheetahmen II scam, scammers may already start taking advantage of the site, leading to our legit project almost getting nowhere!

Is the money that was raised in Paypal Retrievable? Sorry, im not a avid Paypal user.

Edit- Also, how did they exactly break the policy

So the guy who started it hasn't said anything about verifying his account? Like, he started the donation drive and then just didn't get on the internet to check how it was doing after the first day?

PayPal strikes again, they are real grimy bastards. They shouldn't confiscate all the cash though they'll either freeze it, till Mr.3dBrew fixes his account or you guys could do chargebacks if nothing happens.

It's only been since like Saturday that the account was frozen. I'm sure it takes a few business days for them to respond to any issues so this being the first business day since then I'm betting we'd have to wait a bit.

I think there's also a certain limit to how much money can move through the account without upgrading to a business account or something.

On the other hand, PayPal cancelling a lot of flashcard sites' accounts was a reason THIS site lost a lot of sponsors recently. I'm sure just even the SLIGHTEST connection to such would be enough for them to do the same. When that happens, I'm not sure if the money get's transferred to the owners bank account (assuming he was smart enough to actually link one up before he started) or if PayPal just gets to keep it.

If it doesn't get sent back to the donors automatically (which I kinda doubt) you can always do a chargeback if you used a credit card ONCE WE GET OFFICIAL WORD THAT IT'S CANCELLED. (I think PayPal is one of the nice ones that doesn't charge a penalty to the account owner for receiving a chargeback but other service providers just use them as an excuse to steal more money from their clients.) There's other ways to send money. Worst case, he could just have everyone go over to their nearest Western Union.

If it's a matter of having a bank account attached, or his home address confirmed then yeah it's no problem. But if PayPal is voiding the transactions based on the whole 3ds part then they will probably do some greasy stuff. I thought people were saying they got a TOS breach error.

Has anyone thought about posting this to another site, like reddit? I think there would be a lot of people on there (if they aren't already here) that would be interested in this.

Would be nice if someone from 3dbrew would chime in and get this sorted. Tempers aren't exactly the most patient ppl. Especially those that already donated I'm sure want to know what the issue is.
not trying to come off rude, but gshock or someone over there has to know what's goin on.

Could always start another paypal account for something unrelated. Then every person who wants to donate has to get your permission first and then you send them one of those charge-things to them. They don't get the email associated with your paypal fundraiser, people just need to message you with their email and the amount they want to donate.

It's pretty common for PayPal to freeze accounts when they suddenly start receiving massive amounts of money from nowhere. It happened in a project I was working on, took 2 months to resolve. I remember it happening with Pandora pre-orders as well. The situation was never resolved in that case, as far as I remember.
