(...) game systems are often marketed to younger people that aren't exactly walking around with a $550 iPhone 4S in their other pocket.

That's actually the exact opposite of what's going on in Le Real World. You're "cooler" if you have an iPhone, the device is marketed towards the younger crowd, thus plenty kids flash their 4S'es at all times because mommy bought them one.

I thought I was a shut-in but that is some sad shit if people can't even go outside without needing to browse the internet.

The point is that the Vita isn't only a gaming device. Its a multimedia entertainment device. People don't only just want to play games on their handhelds, some people would want to watch videos, play music, and browse the web. Just gaming on a device is a very limited aspect of the device, why do you think people bought flashcarts for their DS besides pirated games.
Err, what. The Vita is a dedicated gaming device. It isn't an all-in-one device. Browsing the web, listening to music and watching videos are all secondary features, gaming comes first. If you want all of those aforementioned features along with some casual games, you might as well buy a smartphone. The fact that you said gaming is a "very limited aspect of the device" tells me you don't know what you're talking about. It's not just a small part of the system, it's the whole damn thing.

I don't know about where you live, but it's not nearly that common here.

Not that I don't doubt it happens at all, but on the flip side I know multiple people who are still using an older "non-smart" phone.

It is really limited in my opinion. For myself I also like to play around with the OS on the device when I am bored, I don't have the money to keep buying games when I get bored of a game. By watching movies, browsing the web it just makes the device be much better. And Sony does have to compete with Apple somehow right? A lot of people say iPod Touch 4/iPhone 4s can play games and do all these other things such as watching movies, and get applications. Remember how people compared the DS with the PSP and how everyone said the PSP is more functional in its OS then the DS? Same thing here.

Handhelds like the 3DS and Vita are gaming devices, internet and stuff are just extra features.

Just like gaming is an extra feature on iphones

That's common where I live.

I honestly don't see why this is such a big deal. A lot of people have computers these days with internet access. Most people who will buy the Vita will have a computer with internet access. Which means it's perfectly fine.(My assumption) So why complain about not being able to browse the internet on your Vita while playing a game? So the fuck what?

In the words of Densetsu, "I remember when game consoles were game consoles and we bought them to play games, not surf the 'Net."

Because if you play the Vita as a portable handheld away from home it sure would be nice to be able to look up a quick guide or something if you're somewhere with wi-fi access.
Especially if you're the type to ragequit if you miss an item or something due to the game blocking off an area or something. :P

Personally, I just think it's silly to add a feature and not integrate it with playing games.
Why add web browsing if we can't use it to assist with or even interact with games?
You could have a game that needed you to look up facts or do research online or something.
Game devs could also better integrate online communities/features this way.
Also seems like a missed opportunity with things like online IM clients.

If you're going to add features to a dedicated gaming device then it should be able to be used while playing games.
It's just a lazy and cheap way to proclaim more features otherwise.

In my mind at least.

I never look up stuff like that. My irritation will make me go find a way to get to the blocked off area
Not everyone needs a guide, I rather rely on my own brain.

I don't think it's silly whatsoever. Laptops are just as portable as a Vita. Thus, wireless.

I personally don't see a problem with this.

We just have two different opinions. Which is fine, to each their own.

Don't mind me, just quoting myself again.

It's something that can be easily patched in on later firmware updates. The writing of the (original) article/interview even make this evident. It's something they want to be possible in the future, so, no problem here.

And for the guy who said Vita multitasking is bad... having Custom Soundtracks, Twitter/Facebook/Foursquare Apps, Cross Chat, Trophies all possible while playing a game is pretty much big for me. Bigger than what home consoles can do even, almost PC level.

Hope people can read.

I like to go away from this forum sometimes. It's really bad for my heart if I stay here for too long AND for my brain if I have to read all the shit some people post here.

Your point being...

It's the first gaming handheld to do these things.

Not saying it can't be done, but RAM-wise, it would need to be set up in advance, or the problem I described earlier would occur should a change in RAM allocation happen, since multi-tasking of this nature would require both game and OS/browser data in RAM to be intact. Taking away from the OS is one thing since that can be updated. Taking away from the amount set for games is another thing and potentially problematic.
