As everybody may know, up to this point, there has been made an announcement at the GDC of this year, in which the president of Nintendo, Mr. Satoru Iwata, announced finally, that the development team of Super Mario Galaxy 2 have been working on a new title that, said by Mr. Miyamoto, is finally the Super Mario game on 3D. I am refering to Super Mario 3DS.

SuperMario3DS--article_image.jpg

This is the biggest announcement ever since the day when Nintendo people showed us pictures of Kid Icarus: Uprising. This game is going to be one of the best games ever. Sadly, Iwata only showed us PICTURES and no In-game videos, or something like it, a little look, a sneak peak, no. Only this:

Super_Mario_3DS_2.png

Well, since we have them, let's speculate!!

1. The logo.

Seems to me like a "Super Mario 64-ish logo" based heavilly on the Galaxy 2 logo design. What we have here that is different is, indeed, what it looks like a Racoon Suit tail or a Tanooki Suit tail... Don't know, but Iwata said that the meaning of it will be revealed at the E3.

2. Mario in a new world.

This image resembles strongly to a Galaxy 2 screenshot. Without the HUD, obviously. But I see something more... On the background, I can note some Brick Blocks and some ? Blocks standing in a road with those twinkling coins. Maybe, this game will bring them back in a way, but, how...?

3. Elevating Mario.

Looks familiar to any of you? Well, we have the ? Blocks and the coins once again. But we have even more. Moving platforms like those of Smash Bros. or Super Mario Bros. 3 and moving blocks, like the ones that you can find in the before said game. And, check that out: DONUT LIFTS!!! These folks were recently seen in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but their last appearance in a 3D Mario game was in 1996, in Super Mario 64. We will see them once again in this game.

4. Chasing the helpless.

Let's see... We have once again the brick blocks and the ? Blocks, a Goomba, but what can I see... It is a standard Mario! (Remember that he is Super Mario once he gets a Super Mushroom) Hat-less?! And the Goomba is chasing after him... Would this mean... the appearance of Super Mushrooms in this game? Oh, wait, I see something more! That block organization... I've seen it before... Right! In Super Mario Bros. saga, usually first levels always have this block alignment and there's only one that provides us with a Power-up! This game gets better and better!

Final pic: The Spinning Block Platform level.

Don't I know them from somewhere? Ah, yes, I've seen' em in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, on the acrobatic levels, like an obstacle. It seems that they reappear here as well as the other Goomba family members. See? We can see two Paragoombas ready to bring us down. Wa-wa-wa-wa-wait a second!!! Is THAT... A Comet Medal?!?! What the heck is it doing here?! Does it mean, that we will have special challenges on certain levels...?

RESUMING: Seems to me that Shigeru Miyamoto has finally founded a way to make a Super Mario Bros. game using 3D environment and classic elements. It looks to me like a 3D version of a Super Mario Bros. game, featuring finally a complete gameplay experience, using elements that are exclusive to the 3D series, as well as those that have appeared only on the side-scrolling games.

Well, those are my speculations.

Now, time to hear yours! Please comment!

The only thing I'm going to say is that I'm sure it won't be a 3D remake of SMB3. And I sure want it to not be one.

What's obvious (from the way Iwata pointed the tail out in the logo at GDC) is that the Raccoon/Tanooki suit is making a comeback.

While many points are already made, the image on the bottom left caught my attention. Not that Mario is small, but the lineup of the ? and brick blocks shown in it. In fact, the top left and right show the same kind of layout (though the right image has the ? block a little closer). I'm inclined to think there is a significance as to why they are laid out like that.

Thinking about Mario Galaxy, I think of "space". If you were to add to that "and" to make "space and ...", what would you think would go after that? For me, I'd think "time". Maybe Bowser, after having flopped with "space", is now focused on "time", and plans to interfere with the past. *shrug*

Strikes me as how Miyamoto and/or Nintendo think.

Mario & Luigi, partners in time.

You are correct, but that wasn't Bowser's doing.

That can be added in like a side quest. It could be like Mario Sunshine where there red coins to collect.

Looks more like Mario 64 than anything else to me, which is perfect in my opinion. Mario 64 was probably the first true 3D platformer, not only did it have the perfect feel of a regular 2D platformer, it got the the 3D right also, perfect motion, perfect camera control etc.
If this Mario games does everything as well as Mario 64 did, then they're on to a winner.

And meet more Marios or sum'n
I'm kinda tired of the same bullshit story of Peach being kidnapped.

I want a darker Mario game.

I;m happy that it isn't a space based game.

Seriously, I didn't like the Galaxy games much.

Alpha waves was the first true 3D platformer, and for the generation you are talking about; crash bandicoot was the first 3D platformer. This game looks great BTW, first in true true, almost true 3D.

Super Mario 64 - first released in Japan on June 23, 1996
Crash Bandicoot - first released in North America on August 31, 1996

Alpha Waves was the first true 3D platformer as you said though.

The only things I can really think of:

1) The logo is bringing back the raccoon suit.

2) I think it will be similar to Mario Galaxy (Like crazy physics, and random objects and stuff, but not in space. But I don't think you'll be like going upside down and having weird camera views). The graphics look a lot like Galaxy too.

From the pictures that I've seen, I think that Mario is going to take a series of levels that are based off of past Mario games.

Elements from SMB3, NSMBWii, and SMB seem to be almost unchanged except for the angles of the camera.

I like the look of this game. The idea of travelling through time sounds likely imo.
I believe that this game will contain elements of most previous Mario games, and I think they're ditching a health bar for the whole classic mushroom thing, which will hopefully make this game a little harder than SM64, Galaxy etc.
I also hope they don't do that space crap again

. I know Galaxy received a lot of praise and one of the rumoured follow-ups to SM64, my favourite game, involved space... but I couldn't even bring myself to finish Galaxy. I thought it was pretty bad

Why not? What is wrong with it?
Some people don't much like 3D Mario.
I'm one of them. I find it less entertaining than 2D, don't know why.
