That is right, you won't be able to play your backups off a DVD. You can still play them through a USB loader though so it's not too bigger deal. Just buy an external harddrive or a large USB stick and you'll be good as gold

Otherwise you could replace the drive, so long as you knew what you were doing. It's easier just to load then off an HDD though.

So..... I bought a Wii yesterday, NA, version 4.2U. I've spent the last three days reading the CompleteSoftmodGuide. The only venture Ive made into the homebrew scene was with my DSi, which went swimmingly.

However, I really want to get this modded, but Im scared. If I shaqfu this thing up, my wife will be a widow by her own doing.

So assuming I follow the guide off perfectly starting out (SDHC card, formatted to FAT32 since its all I have and I have 4.2), download and extract the boot.elf from the hackmii installer and put it on the root of the SDHC card, download the abd6a.zip (for 4.2) from the bannerbomb site and extract it to the root of the SDHC card as well, and immediately go in and back up my Wii's NAND..... its all gravy (aka cool) from there right? Even if I completely do something dumb, I can always rewind and get back to the point before I did said dumb thing?

Sorry if this is very noobish, but going into this pool for the first time, I just want some reassurance that it'll be okay!

EDIT: Also, looking at the guide, from that point, it looks like you are on your own to install whatever you like. What are the "mandatory" installs from that point? If Im looking to play my backups from a external hd, would downloading priiloader (to prevent disc updates) and then what? Do you download a launcher AND a loader? Is there any that work as both, or recommended setup?

You can do that or just use this guide and get the modify.zip which includes all the files you need. It literally takes only 5 minutes to do with modify.zip. You can still use CompleteSoftmodGuide as a reference to understand what you're doing.

I've been using 4.2U with no problems from this mod, but I'm trying to play the Monster Hunter Tri demo disc and it's asking for a system update. Am I able to update the Wii alright from the disc? Is there anything I can do to update the Wii without bricking it? Thanks.

EDIT:
I can launch the game fine from the backup channel.

When you turn on the wii hold reset so the priiloader menu comes up (I'm presuming you installed priiloader), go into system menu hacks and enable the 'block online updates' and 'block disc updates'. Never update through Nintendo.

Out of curiousity, when I do the initial steps like loading bootmii and the HBC, should I disable the WiFi connection?

It doesn't matter, you can disable it if you want to be ultra cautious but it's not going to make a difference unless you think you're accidentally going to click on system menu update in the wii's settings.

I presume you have cIOS 249 rev 19 from this guide installed? If so I think you have installed it to the wrong base IOS as applications don't support other base IOS's at the moment. Most applications are only supported by base IOS 38 at the moment and this guide installs cIOS249 with base IOS 57. You could re install cIOS 249 using base IOS 38 or just install cIOS 38 rev 17 which would save you some confusion if you are unsure what you're doing.

i did this guide: http://sites.google.com/site/completesg/

but i think i deleted the Stub IOSs because of this on the guide:

Removing Stub IOSs
If you are on 4.2 (official update), there will be some unwanted (stub) IOSs on your Wii. Let's get rid of those first.

If you exited out of DOP-Mii, boot it again and press A to get to the Main menu.

Now choose the Top option (IOS: 36) and press A.

You will see another menu. Here, choose the top option again (IOS, BC, MIOS). You will see yet another menu.

* Go right to IOS202. Press - to uninstall it. Press A to confirm.
* Repeat this for IOS222, 223, 249 and 250.
