I know there is a lot of methods that exist so that people can try to explain how all the Zelda games fit into the series... the one that used to be my favorite, the split timeline theory.. It can't exist. It would RELY on Older Link having gone on in the timeline that he was on, but everyone seems to neglect that he gives Zelda back his Ocarina so that she can send him back to being young again. :-/ What the hell.

The split timeline theory is based on the fact that at the end of Ocarina of Time, Zelda sends Link back to before the two met. This creates two worlds, one which has Link in it, and one which the hero of time has mysteriously vanished. Likewise, in the first universe, Ganondorf is still loose, where in the second, Link-less universe, had a Ganon which is sealed away.

Every Zelda game, except for Wind Waker and it's sequels, take place in the universe where Link was sent back to as a kid. Majora's Mask, Link's Awakening, and the like, all have the Ocarina of Time Link, or one of his descendants, carrying on with adventures.

The Wind Waker states at the start that after sealing Ganon away, the Hero of Time VANISHES. This is not an older Link continuing adventuring in that story line. Instead, it's his absence directly effecting how the world unfolds.

Hope that clears some of it up. There's only one Link after Ocarina of Time, not two. The "Older Link" universe is effected by him missing, not his actions. The heros in those games simply share his name.

Except that you are all wrong since Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma themselves have gone on record saying there IS a split timeline in an interview with Gamepro in 2002.

"Aonuma: Oh, right, let me elaborate on that. Ocarina of Time basically has two endings of sorts; one has Link as a child and the other has him as an adult. This game, The Wind Waker, takes place a hundred years after the adult Link defeats Ganon at the end of Ocarina.
Miyamoto: This is pretty confusing for us, too. (laughs) So be careful."

You can say it's wrong all you want, but it's fact and has been accepted as such for a long time. Beyond that there are a lot of inconsistencies with the non-split timeline and Windwaker + Twilight Princess.

And for the people saying Zelda shouldn't be canonized, why don't you tell that to Nintendo? Miyamoto (I think it was him, either him or Aonuma) have also gone on record saying Zelda DOES, in fact, have a set timeline. The development teams create the Zelda game completely independent of the current timeline, then they have a small team who work to fit it into its proper place in the timeline.

Unless two of the most important people in Zelda development are full of shit or are outright lying then this thread is sooooooo very wrong.

EDIT: Here's a lot more info (with sources cited for all of you who are just going to cry foul even when you have no idea what you're talking about): http://zelda.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline

BTW, that wasn't a dig at anyone in particular, I'm just so fed up with the ignorance surrounding this subject and the people who swear up and down that they actually know what's going on.

Song of Time. If it can send you back 3 days or 7 years into the future, why not like 20 years?

Theories go BOOOOOOMMMMM.

Lol that has to be the best explaination of something that can't be explained.

:| The Song of time doesn't work how you think it does. It uses some sort of "time checkpoint system" You can't use it at free will to jump around.. and all it really does it bring you back three days. 7 Years was controlled by sword and realms and such.

The whole "it's a legend, there are different interpretations" bit has also gotten pretty old. It is a fact that there IS a timeline. You can pretend there isn't and that it hasn't been stated by Miyamoto and Aonuma themselves several times, but you'd be wrong. There is a timeline, it is a split timeline, there is documentation in existence of the full master timeline.

Gee, why don't we just ignore all the facts we know about the game completely and augment it with whatever bullshit things we have in our heads? Link is now a 30 year old body builder with a burly, rugged exterior, but a heart of gold (and a voice that can make a walrus purr), Zelda is now an astro-physicist supermodel who has been kidnapped by Ganon who is now a 4 foot tall millionaire who plans to use Zelda to create a machine to sap all the geothermal energy that is stored under the earth's (that's right, it takes place on Earth, in AMERICA) so he can hold the world hostage for copious amounts of money. BRILLIANT!

to be honest until i saw the AVGN's take on the timeline of the legand of zelda, i've always tended to think of each zelda game as a sort of remake or variation of the legand in much the same way as we don't know our own history exactly (merely different takes/accounts of it which gives us a broad picture)

Perhaps it's like Crisis on Infinite Earths... Perhaps it was never meant to make sense... Perhaps trying to tie us loose ends is futile and -- er -- funless...

I am a Splitist as the AVGN would say...

After playing WindWaker and Majora I thought, that there would be no question about it

But who cares, the games are damn fun and to think about the timeline is fun as well but I guess I`ll stay with the split-theory, since IMO it makes more sense but I sure don`t know every aspect of the Zelda story...

Miyamoto also said once, that OoT was the first in the timeline but what is with Minish-Cap? Was there every a doubt about Minish-Cap not being the first in the timeline.

So who knows
