good morning everyone. i have a question that I know hasn't been asked. is releasing the source code to these loaders a good idea? does open source = faster action to disable it by nintendo? can't they look at the source code and know what to include in the next update to make it useless?

Maybe I am wrong but the only way they can counter this is disabling the dvd rom mode for good or getting rid of homebrew altogether so I don't think it would matter if the source was released. Anyway, as long as Wiigator is on the scene I could care less about the source code

.

By the way...... GOOD JOB WIIGATOR.
And thanks to you Waninkoko, you deserve more than your share of the credits too.

If the new loader is based on GeckOS like the current loader from WiiGator is, then he has no choice. He will have to release the source.
I don't know if he'd have to release the source for the CIOS though, unless it's based on Waninkoko's (If I recall correctly)

@deervark

As long as people don't update their Wii:s they should be okay. The system menu (3.3) works fine as it is, I mean, why fix something that's not broken? I personally never update my Wii (unless I'm forced to, ofc).

From what I know, the new loader is NOT based on GeckOS, and the new cIOS is NOT based on Waninkoko's (DIP Module). So it's still completely up to Wiigator to decide wether or not to release the source.

I think nintendo give most consoles a 2 year shelf life and based their sales on that - anything over it is a bonus.
How many more wii's will be sold worldwide if this all starts to work properly ?
Nintendo may fix it in the future , but they are happy to leave the hype there for a while , boost their sales and eventually do something about it if the console sales are not pulling their weight any more to increase game sales once again when people have already bought their wii's

They arent stupid - this may be bad in theory for them , but it could be great in the long run.

Kinda the same scenario Apple were in with the iPhone when it first came out in the U.S, they were secretly happy it got unlocked cos it caused more and more sales. It was only available in the U.S at launch, yet it was being used all over the world,lol.

I dont think Nintendo need the backup launcher to increase sales though, its still selling like hot cakes.

I don't think having access to source would help nintendo very much. They can't change anything in how the program runs, instead they can only change the *official* code that operates on their system, or change the hardware in future versions.

I'm sure nintendo has 'debug' versions of the wii they work with, and using one of them they can easily look at how and where each hardware component is being accessed and they'll know what is going on from that point enough to do as much as they can to counter act it.

On the other hand, open source is much better for the scene because if nintendo does find something to counter act it, hundreds and thousands of potential people trying to come up with another solution is alot better than, say, 3 or however many are working on the current project. Not to mention people looking at the code and coming up with other ideas, improvements, completely new projects (remember, this project surely has its roots in other homebrew stuff)...
