Otherwise, this game is generic all the way through. Generic combat, generic equipment, generic plot, generic environment, generic town, generic dialogs, generic anime portraits. All the staples of these japanese games and if you've played one of them, you've pretty much played them all. Although some tend to be at least marginally more entertaining than others--if Soma Bringer were available in english, it would be advisable simply because all the elements it lifts from other games tend to be better produced than here. At least in that game you get two AI controlled companions and the graphics are better managed by zooming out.
The only discernible alteration from the formula is that you gain abilities by extracting them from an enemy the first time you see one. I'm sure some people will tout this feature as a reason to play the game, but make no mistake that the difference between this and gaining abilities through levelling is non existent. It certainly does nothing to alter the way the game is played, and the fact remains that the skills are still--you guessed it--generic.
Anyway, if you're a fan of games in the vein of Shining Soul, Summon Night, the post SoM Seiken Densetsus, and all the other run-of-the-mill japanese beat 'em ups, then this is one more to throw on the heap.
Seems to be working alright on my Ez-V. Did you update everything?Hachibei said:I got an error message about 3 screens into the first level. Something along the lines of
"ERROR: The game card is not inserted. Please power off."
New anti-piracy technology, or just a problem with my EZ-V?
Also this game plays like Children of Mana, except fun.
EDIT: Nope, problem with my EZ-V.

But the levels are recycled over and over and it's basically just tiresome mashing of the A-button. The bottom-screen interface is pretty well thought out, but I don't think it's a game I want to invest much time into.
I could say the same about random battles in RPGs and yet...dib said:irpacynot said:Pretty uninspired stuff here. No, the interface to Soma Bringer was well thought out. This one requires you to alternate screens for information if you want to see both your stats and the mini map and be able to access any items, with an antiquated inventory system. One potion per slot, out of the two dozen or whatever? Who programs a game like this anymore past like 1998?
