So I thought I'd give ROM Hacking a shot. Turns out I bit off more than I could chew. The amount of information that is available for it is astoundingly confusing and frankly, I've just about given up on it. What I wanted to do is get images all of the badges/pins in the game. I tried extracting and looking up the unpacked files. Nothing in there seems to resemble images/sprites types. I tried running it through an emulator but the graphics aren't showing up for the badges (just my luck). And now I'm searching around to see if I could take screenshots of the game on my NDS. It's bothering me since I've seen sprite sheets of the characters put not the badges/pins.

Are you guys willing to point me in the right direction here? You don't have to do the work, I just want to know the easiest and foolproof way to approach this so I could actually learn how to do these things myself.

Do you mean these?

They're in a bunch of different .bin files, with Badge in the filename. You'll know you've got one if you open it up in a hex editor and you see circles.

Each segment starts with "pack" and has a palette near the end. Open up the file in Tile Molester and use the following settings:
- View > Mode: 2-Dimensional
- View > Codec: 4bpp linear, reverse order
- Image > Canvas size: 4

Then use Navigate > Go To and keep trying different numbers until you find an offset where the entire badge shows up in a single piece. Use Palette > Import From > This File and enter the offset (in decimal) of the palette that you found in the hex editor (should be a multiple of 16), and size = 16. Finally, export to your desired graphic file format using Edit > Copy To.

I've never played this game so I don't know how many badges there are, but obviously this is a rather tedious process.

Fixed one small thing. Great guide there! I didn't expect it to be that easy. Oh squeenix.

Thank you, DarthNemesis. That very clear and concise! I appreciate you taking the time to show me how to work this.

Hrm. I'm having a difficult time trying to get the correct color palette for this. In the file you've used, the hex editor is giving me an offset of 03A7BA00, which in decimal form is 61323776 (a multiple of 16). I tried that out, but got some weird colors (even weirder than what it started out with). Is there something I am missing or misunderstanding about the palette?

The file's not even 7kb, how'd you get an offset that huge? The palettes for the file I used (Apl_Tak/Grp_BtlBadge.bin) are at offsets 992, 1856, 2720, 3584, 4448, 5312, 6176, and 7040.

I realise you guys are having fun hexing, but for folks who just want the pins I grabbed 304 pins from the screen saver from the japanese website.
The full PNG is 7.1 megs (24 bit + alpha channel). It does not have the 'player' pin the characters get at the start (it has a red and black version of it but not the black and white).

All 304 at above size
(7 megs, not there for long)

DarthNemesis: Ah, I get it now. *facepalm* I've been looking at the wrong offset. I got it under control now. Thanks!

Porkdish: Screensaver? Wow. This will be very useful to display for hi-res pins. Thank you for that!

But I want to do them with the Player Pins and the O-Pins (red/black Player Pins)

Anyone with these two hi-res'd graphics?

It seems that I tried looking on how to make these badges... I thought there were empty button badges that you can make yourself... but all of them you need a badgemaker machine

There are places you can send designs to to get badges made up. I don't know what country you're in, but I'm in the UK and there's http://www.badgesforbands.com/ , http://www.awesomebadges.co.uk/ and http://www.skadonsbadges.co.uk/ for example. I've never used any of them, but a few friends of mine have used badges for bands and recommend them.
