The Nintendo Switch eShop is shutting down in China

tencent.png

The Nintendo Switch is at the end of its lifecycle, but especially so in China. After what will have been six years of service, the Nintendo Switch eShop will be shutting down permanently in China, including all network services. Starting on March 31, 2026, you won't be able to buy any games on the Chinese eShop, then on May 15th, the removal of the ability to redeem game codes or purchase DLC will occur. Online play will also end on the same date, with network services shutting down for good. To make up for the shuttering of the eShop, Nintendo of China will be giving Switch users four free select first-party games, to be redeemed through WeChat.

I just looked at my original Switch box, and nowhere does it say online services can and will be disabled in the future. This is just wrong and should be illegal. I know its inevitable but still, at least put it in writing on the box. "Guaranteed Online Access Till 202x". Yea its only in China but will happen worldwide eventually.
stopkillinggames.com is trying to get publishers to think about and communicate their end of life plans for new games to potential customers. If they make it, this "writing on the box" might be actually be a thing warning people of the inevitable shutdown.

Good, It should be posted on all console and game packaging so we know before buying it.

How exactly is that gonna work? Say a publisher brings out a new online game today and they think the game is gonna be a huge success so they put a date of sever shutting down on June 7th 2035 on the packaging and no fucker plays the game they are then stuck having to keep the game legally online until the published date. You only need to look at concord on the ps5/pc to see how this could go completely wrong for a company.

Maybe they could state for example if at least 5000+ users still are using this service then guaranteed online till 202x, Idk, but you have a good point.

The problem with that is publishers would just put an unreasonable amount down and say 1 billion users or something stupid like that :rofl2:

This sort of situation isn't exactly what SKG is pushing to change, though it could still be effected. Minimum length guarantees would be nice, but SKG's focus is more on end of life plans. So, they can run the game however they want while it's being supported, but when they drop support they need to leave the game in a functional state, in whatever form that might be - an offline mode, the ability to host your own servers, whatever.

So the eshop shutting down wouldn't really be impacted by that. The games you download still work fine. The only thing that could be relevant would be the ability to redownload previously bought games, but I don't think there's a practical solution to that.
