"Star Fox 64" is getting a native PC port

Another beloved classic from the 5th Generation of videogame consoles is getting a native PC port. This time, the famous on-rails shooter for the Nintendo 64, Star Fox 64 (or Lylat Wars depending on the region), is getting a proper PC port made by the same developers that brought Ocarina of TIme to PC.

"Starship" is the codename given to the PC port of the game, made by the same people behind the Ship of Harkinian, specifically Sonic Dreamcaster and Samplywx, since they were the ones who worked on this specific PC port of Star Fox 64. The developers from Ship of Harkinian are now going by the name of Harbour Masters 64, and a few days ago, speedrunner Rakanai livestreamed a complete run of the game showcasing a beta of the native PC port, and while Titania had some bugs and glitches, those issues are expected to be resolved in due time.

The pros from the Ocarina of Time PC (Ship of Harkinian) port could apply to Star Fox 64 as well, with the expected 60 fps without speedup glitches tied to animations, proper widescreen and even ultra wide support, higher resolutions, support for mods and even a fanmade remaster are within possibilities once the PC port is finally available.

While the PC port of Star Fox 64 still doesn't have a final release date, the team are expecting a proper build of the game to be available on December for users to play. Those interested in playing the PC port, remember that you will be required to provide your own dump of Star Fox 64 in order to create the PC build.

This is great news. Like Ship of Harkinian and the Recompilation(s), I'm hoping this has a smooth release.

Star Fox 64 had some lag on the original N64, so I'm looking forward to the new features. It'll be interesting to see what mods are added, like using the uncompressed voice samples or replacing the models with their 3DS counterparts.

FINALLY! Some love to this amazing 90s classic.
Seriously groundbreaking thanks to the Rumble Pack Feature, Cinematic intros, cut scenes, gameplay and that hidden ending for experts was memorable.

The 3D remake was nice too. Hope to see that kind of style with the classic N64 gameplay.

Not having to worry about emulation issues and playing at 60 fps are obvious benefits, but biggest benefit to me is the possibility to be able to customize the controls at a deeper level. The N64 joystick is unique in its own way and this game uses it to its full potential, but to the point that no other stick ever feels right. But with a decomp we should be able to thinker with the values and logic do adapt any sort of joystick, or even a mouse. I'll finally be able to use my flight joystick in it!

I always wanted to play this one
It's pretty good.

And also allow for a more "standard" control scheme

starfox 64 is truly a timeless classic.
I really why nintendo mishandled that franchise so much.
Argonaut Software was plenty ambitious with their two SNES games, and the N64 was the perfect opportunity for Nintendo to polish Star Fox with state-of-the-art graphics and voice acting.

After that, I think Nintendo had trouble innovating on the rail shooter. Even the Wii U's gimmick was an opportunity to do something with the franchise, but even Platinum Games struggled with the project. I think Star Fox and F-Zero are in positions where a new entry needs both a unique idea and an opportunity to stand out.

I think a lot of people forget that the first Star Fox is basically Star Glider 3. Argonaut already had their shit together and knew exactly what they were doing with the franchise. When Nintendo got their eyes on Star Glider 3 they knew it was gonna be a huge hit so got on board and asked Argonaut to make it more child friendly and Star Glider 3 became Star Fox

What i loved about SOH is that it allowed Link to have custom tunic colors. I always loved that. I made mine look like the Animal Crossing Joy-Cons and for fire, i picked Mario Red. I must say they look awesome. Hopefully those kind of features also come to Starship ☺️

Really excited for this project. I could see this going well with a flight simulator joystick setup, but even refined mouse and keyboard support would be nice. But above all, I'd really love to see Versus support online play.
