I'm not a techie guy, but i5? I have 2 Dells [laptop n PC] with i5 and they have trouble just running the basics.

I'm going to upgrade them to i7's

if the laptop is upgradeable that means it's at least 10 years old, which would explain why it struggles to "run the basics"

What actual models though? A modern i3 will probably perform better than the i7 in one of my old laptops.

yeah that laptop is ancient, no wonder it struggles to run things, the desktop still has some life to give though, that generation of i5s is still a fairly hard fighter

The desktop is decent, that laptop is more ancient than you. Got a decent amount of RAM though. It's probably DDR3 but it's worth saving when you throw away the rest.
What OP is talking about is recent hardware, it doesn't even compare.

Personally i recommend looking up what CPU you mb supports. You can also try a cheap SSD and a low profile gpu to speed it all up
