I cant comment for everyone but i tested the demo and i never saw the game dip below 70fps or so with dlss 4k ultra settings. apart from the locked 30fps cutscene sections nor did i notice any stuttering. was it a perfect technical experience? no, but compared to most aaa companies the past couple of years releasing unfinished crap (like the stuttering mess hogwarts was for a long time until they eventually fixed that), its a B+ from me. At least in terms of stability and performance. Whether i will love the game is a totally different thing but from what i played it played very similar to ffvii remake, a game i found pretty fun for what it was

how is a meta score of 87 "not well received"?
alot of people ignored it. Square enix said it didn't sell as much as they wanted.
I don't think anyone really wanted Game of Thones meets Final Fantasy. plus the downer endings from the last couples games suck. Tales of Arise is a good example of righting the ship (story wise). The team realized people weren't happy with the downer endings and story, and went back to basics.

I refer to the metacritic score and rest my case.

And nice, spoilers too! Thanks, very thoughtful of you :)

Actually you are wrong, your article from jan 2024 is out of date.

As of May 2024, at a shareholders meeting, they admitted both ff16 and ff7 remake aren't doing so well.

article is behind a paywall, so can't read it. But it seems this is talking about the fiscal year, not FF16 specifically.

Regardless, your statements that nobody wanted the game are just... wrong. I can link to metacritic again if you want. Granted, some fans maybe wanted something else - but it's always been like that with Final Fantasy, each iteration is divisive. But besides that, it's a critically acclaimed game that sold millions :)

okay I'll paste the summary

Square Enix said:
-FF16 sales fell short of expectations. Initial momentum was in line with expectations, but the games failed to reach FY goal as its momentum slowed. No updates from sales number last announced at 3 million
-FF7 Rebirth sales fell short of expectations. Initial momentum didn't reach an internal target. No sales number to share
-Foamstars fell short of expectations. Initial momentum didn't reach an internal target. No sales number to share
-Remains confident FF16 can achieve its goal over the original 18-month sales plan. Also, sales of Rebirth and Foamstars aren't necessarily bad.
-Reorganized develoment team into five console teams, one smartphone game team
-Has been relied too much on an individual's creativity. Will promote sharing game making how-how among teams and will seek best balance of individual creativity and organizational discipline
-DQ12 remains under development.

it's clear square enix is outta of touch with what the core audience wants.

metrics like metacritic can be gamed. internal shareholders meetings are always much more blunt and real.

I recall Square-Enix having high sales targets, which resulted in games with decent numbers being deemed commercial failures. I'm not sure if that's still true, but Square-Enix has had plenty of wins throughout the last few gens, from Dragon Quest XI to Octopath Traveller 1 and 2, and Dragon Quest XII will sell tons on release.

If Final Fantasy VII Rebirth sales are actually as low as implied, I wonder how that'd affect development. I'm not convinced the third entry will be the final, but if they need to pull the plug on the series, they'd need to smush everything into the last installment Xenosaga style.

Exactly, and the article even states the sales aren't necessarily bad, just lower than their high expectations. Besides it's on PC now, to sell even more.

I have been playing final fantasy since 1997, and I am definitely a part of the core audience - and I enjoyed it a lot!

I jumped in around Final Fantasy VI and Super Mario RPG, but I was never a big JRPG person until Grandia. That game was such a hidden gem. From there, Dragon Quest VIII and Persona 3 FES were the big standouts.

Yes, I played through Grandia II on the PS2. It only froze on me once, but the characters losing their textures during battle was extremely common.

The 3d era was the high for ff. FF7 (psx) sold 14 million. ff X sold 20 million. FF15 sold 10 million.
FF16 sold 3 million.
Even if you stayed, FF16 lost millions of players from the height of the 3d era.

So obviously the core base for 3d games is unhappy. However the snes era was always 4 million and under. So maybe you represent that era.

Your post intrigued me, so I tried to track down the numbers. Really fascinating.

I'm not surprised that Final Fantasy IX sold fewer copies (initial release) than VII or VIII because it was at the very end of the PS1 era. Still, it's a great looking game with a fantastic soundtrack.

Exactly, in fact ffix might be the best of the ps1 trilogy. Sales have nothing to do with the quality of the game.

spoken like a snes ff fan. ffix was okay but I wouldn't say its the best of the psx trilogy.
Hahaha, Final Fantasy VII vs. any other FF may be a divisive topic. It seems like everyone's top three FF games are different. I know I'd put VI in one of the top spots.

I'll never refer to the main character of Final Fantasy V as "Bartz" though.

lol. You sound like my dad. He's got the originals snes ff carts. he's loves ff6 the most too. I've only played the pc and android versions. I think I like 10 the most.
