This was one of those games that were popular for like a week and then were never heard from again. Is it any good?
Like any new installment in the Final Fantasy franchise it got fans upset, afaik the main reason would be that you don't really manage a party but only the main character in this one...

I don't think the game is necessarily bad but if you get into it with specific expectations you might be disappointed...

JRPG is a genre that's slowly dying anyway, the amount of those games that recently recently released and are actually appealing to people beyond the core niche of fans is close to zero, JRPG is a genre that's dying of inbreeding, any deviation from fan expectations is met with harsh backlash...

Honestly, very pretty but was easier than a Paw Patrol game, some of the bosses dragged on so long, I think one was 15 minutes long but there was no threat, no difficulty just spectacle and the game wore thin, especially towards the end.

Became one of those games where you're too invested to quit but questioning why you're invested at all.

Playing the game on PC could fix many of its issues, a 2x damage mod (both ways) would help.
I think the first half of the game was quite strong, but it fell off in the second half - and the side missions were such a chore, not worth doing them.

I really enjoyed the story and presentation of this game and although I like this kind of combat, this kind of game is not fit for that. it's too long and too easy and lakes variation. But my biggest gribe was the poor perf ormance of the ps5 version.

I don't play modern JRPG's, but I keep hearing how they're basically hack 'n slash games now. Dragon Quest XI and Super Mario RPG Remake may have been the last high profile JRPG's that stuck to their roots.

final fantasy really died with 13. it lost the romantic adventure vibe from Hironobu Sakaguchi, and became a pale imitation of itself.
That's such a shame. I feel like JRPG's helped define the industry with games like Final Fantasy VI and VII, Chrono Trigger, etc. Is it that they don't sell anymore? Maybe large-scale JRPG projects can't be supported. (See: Final Fantasy VII Remake broken into parts.)

Well, FFXVI is an ARPG and people expect FF=JRPG. Pair that with a pretty but extremely easy game with a subpar story and it is easy to see why it wasn't well received. Decent JRPGs sell just fine. If anything WRPGs are practically dead in comparison.

I was super excited for it going in, and it ultimately ended up being pretty disappointing. A really mid game. I think I rated it like a 6.5/10?

The best part of the game is the prologue, and the rest is just a kind of meandering mess of plot conveniences, lack of character depth, and really bad treatment of any plot important woman in the cast lol
There's also basically no actual politicking, despite the complex political intrigue being the entire impetus for the plot. Any questions from the demo / prologue you have are answered within like the first 25% of the game, or become irrelevant to the story immediately.

The gameplay gets pretty dull too. There's no reason to actually switch up your tactics at any point because everything you do will take out the enemies in the exact same way every time. The best fights are the ones where they remove your action moveset.
There's basically no strategizing when it comes to enemy encounters beyond spamming the combo you like best.
They also lock the interesting enemy team compositions behind a new game plus exclusive difficulty mode, so your first playthrough is always going to be a bit of a cakewalk, and even in NG+ enemies don't have specific weaknesses or strengths so you just tackle the fights in the exact same way.
