Gamescom is upon us! - Press Release #3

threpressrelease.gif

It's been a pretty hefty week of news and announcements thanks to Gamescom, with the event still running through the weekend. As usual I've collated as much as I can from my inbox, slightly tweaking the layout again to hopefully get that bit closer to making it digestible.

Fun-Looking Releases

This week we see the release of one highly anticipated game, but I've tried my best to fish out a few others for those wanting something different.

Black Myth: Wukong
Available on PS5 and Steam
➤ Even if this isn't a game I'll be picking up for a good while to come, this new Action RPG looks fantastic. Pushing visual boundaries (and graphics cards…) with what looks to be some really fun combat, it's a game I can't see many being disappointed by. Assuming you can run it anyway.

Mika and The Witch's Mountain
Available on Switch and Steam
➤ Mika has released to some pretty mixed reviews from major outlets. I'm not quite sure why it's on Switch when it's still marked as Early Access on the Steam side of things, but I will at least say I like what they were going for here. This is a game where you play as a witch delivering packages... A familiar story for fans of Studio Ghibli. According to the Early Access information they plan to use the next six months to add to the experience and embrace feedback. If it's not quite there yet, it could be one for the wishlist while you wait for a 1.0 release.

Harvest Moon: Home Sweet Home
Available on iOS and Android
➤ Did you know there's a new Harvest Moon game coming to iOS? Did you know it was already out? I just don't know what to think of Harvest Moon in its current state, but releasing a new game as a one-off £17.99 purchase on a mobile platform is certainly something interesting. I've heard that with Winds of Anthos, Natsume have actually started to bring the series back in a positive direction (albeit still very different from the parallel Story of Seasons), so this might yet be one worthy of consideration if you've perhaps seen all there is to see on Stardew Valley.

Tactical Breach Wizards
Available on Steam
➤ An XCOM-looking turn-based strategy filled with humour and some great stylish graphics. I don't have a lot to say here, the game just looks really good. If somebody ends up picking it up I'd love to hear more.

Wrapping Up

And that's it for this week! We've seen a lot of announcements for 2025, but looking even to next month we have a new Zelda game, and the long-awaited return of Ace Attorney Investigations on modern platforms. There's plenty to look forward to for the rest of this year, and I'll try my best to throw it in here.

gaming has gone the way of cinema. nothing new and just remakes and copycats. e3 was smart to get out of the buisness because alot of these things like gamescon become a letdown.

Mika and The Witch's Mountain definitely earn those mixed reviews.
It was cheap enough to be a try and see game (it's gotta a demo) for my switch.

I didn't really enjoy it. The vibe really felt like little dragon's cafe (which I hated on the switch but liked okay enough on the pc).

Wukong is the big winner for sure, the game really wowed me with the little things like 2d animations. It's clear the developers love videogames. I'm annoyed how unreal games all look samey, but they did a good job. The unreal VR mod for wukong makes it mind blowingly awesome.

With Mika do you think the basic gameplay is there to the point where it could be worth it after Early Access? Seemed a bit of an ambitious move to put it onto the Switch as it is, and it’s clearly not paid off.

It's certainly a budget game. I think it's probably worth the 20USD(two starbucks drinks in america) if you like what they are offering.
I'm personally leaning on it's not worth the time investment, better games to play.

I think it could end up being like no man's sky, if the developers add a bit more charm, npcs, story, and side quest system variation. The developers were clear competent at a technical level, it's just missing some "juice" to the core game loop and overall world.

I really like this new table format or have we had it forever?
The table itself has been around for an age, though it's the first time I've used it with one of these posts. The format is still evolving, probably got a few more iterations to go until I'm happy lol

Yeah I get the extra annoyance, maybe hyperlinks for the game title to games main webpage? I'd go nuts hunting down every single platform link just to click it to go buy for a specific system for a game instead of a clickable image that goes to the trailers. Took minute to realize that was there but of I'm a tl;dr type. Still like it.

The issue with that is that the list is for games that are newly announced; most of them don't have pages on all their platforms yet given the 2025 release dates. It's something I can look at, but with them mostly being so early I just wanted to give people something to click for more information beyond the genre, and most things seem to get a trailer when they're announced.

I do at least include links for the games that are out, so that's something lol

From the lineup of announcements of games at Gamescom, I mostly saw a list of games that were uninspiring, but more flashy that didn't stand out w/ any ingenuity and will probably either get shelved due to being stuck in development hell or they never see the light of day w/ development getting canceled altogether. Barely a handful of games piqued my interest.
