"Black Myth: Wukong" has been one of the most anticipated games in this later half of 2024 due to the development team's focus and love for its unique background, stunning visuals and settings inspired on chinese mythology and the classic chinese "Journey to the West" novel.

The game officially released yesterday, on August 19th, 2024 for PC through Steam and PlayStation 5, with a port for the Xbox Series consoles coming later, with high praise all around currently sitting at an "Overwhelmingly Positive" stance on Steam from user reviews only. The game has also been an absolute success, with a lot of concurrent gamers playing the game on Steam.

As of today and at the time of writing, Wukong has broken the previous record Palworld held for being the 2nd game with an "All-Time Peak" number of current players on SteamDB, which previously had the peak number at 2.1 million players, while the number 1 position is still held by PUBG at 3.25 million. Wukong broke that 2nd place record today and is currently sitting at 2.22 million current players and still growing, even breaking the current players number for the day out of Counter Strike 2 as number one on Steam, beating the peak players for the day as well out of CS2.

"Black Myth: Wukong" is currently available on Steam for those interested in trying it out and making an opinion about this unique title on their own.

Has anyone here played the game yet? I’m trying to figure out what kind of game it is and I’m seeing all different answers

Some say it’s like eldin ring…others are saying god of war. I’m so confused

All the videos I’m seeing just makes this seem like monkey eldin ring. Which my stoned ass can’t do lol timings are too tight

I was able to get the hang of stellar blade tho

Developer controversies aside, it's a very solid game from the few hours I've put in so far. Performance isn't the greatest, but the graphics are some of the best we've seen this generation, and the free benchmark tool you can download is accurate to what you can expect from the full game. Getting 60-80 FPS on my rig with DLSS at balanced. Character designs are really great/unique.

Kind of a mix of DMC-style action combat and some Soulslike influence. Easier than Souls games and the early parts of Elden Ring, but still satisfying when you get perfect dodges and the like. Skill tree is more like an action game, there aren't really RPG stats to deal with, but there are different weapons/armor to be found. Far more story and dialogue-heavy than FromSoft games, but not to an annoying extent.

Interesting so it sounds like it’s more like stellar blade than and you can actually get stronger so bosses don’t always wipe you and make you memorize every attack pattern ha

That helps a ton thank yoh

Another monthly borelike, woohoo, can't have too much of those, so fresh, much original.

You mean like your post, right? Shows you know little to nothing of the game. Although there are influences, it's definitely not a soulslike game.

I thought PUBG had millions of players at its height? Only 2 million is 2nd highest of all time? Ok?

3,257,248 players at it's height is not millions of players?

GOTY Potential?...
I'd say so. Hoping STALKER 2 and Metaphor: ReFantazio turn out good, but those both have more niche appeal I'd say. WH40K Space Marine 2 could be a wild card, I suppose, given it has co-op and PvP in addition to single-player.

Games like 'STALKER 2' and 'Metaphor: ReFantazio' aren't moving the needle in terms of game changing mechanics and immersiveness and storytelling, and I wouldn't hold out hope for 'WH40K Space Marine 2' as GOTY material based on Digital Foundry's critique of the game pertaining to a private showing/gameplay demo they were given.

It's not like Wukong is extremely unique in terms of gameplay mechanics either, but it is a well-polished experience that manages to keep things fresh from moment to moment. People love an FPS-RPG hybrid when done right, and STALKER 2 could deliver on everything that Starfield didn't. You're probably right about Metaphor and Space Marine 2 though, turn-based RPGs and third-person shooters are genres past their prime in terms of mainstream appeal.

Oh, and figured I'd bring this to everybody's attention in case y'all hadn't seen it yet, 8BitDo kinda shadow-dropped an awesome new controller design for Black Myth:

Who are all these people that can just afford a 7800x3D/rtx 4090 build that had just been waiting for this game to come out? Literally didn't know anything about this game but seeing Hardware Unboxed's video about it just makes me think the same jerk-ass time traveleler that showed cd projekt red a 7090 and told them it was a 2080 was at it again.

The first trailer dropped back in 2019 or 2020, and most people didn't believe it was even going to become a real game at that point. So yeah, there's been a lot of time for anticipation to build.
