Earth Defense Force 6 launches to negative reception following undisclosed Epic Games requirement for online play

Earth Defense Force has always been a bit of a unique series. Featuring awkward controls and often-repetitive missions, the games have managed to find a following for their fun and frantic gameplay, along with their magnificently cheesy voice acting. While the games are fun to play alone, it’s in the up to four player multiplayer where they really come into their own, and it’s here the latest entry has come under fire.

EDF 6 has been available to pre-order on Steam for the past month, after releasing in Japan on PS4 and PS5 back in 2022. Retailing for £49.99 in the UK with a few token pre-order bonuses, the game had fans relatively excited to get hands on with the latest entry. The game launched today, and as early buyers downloaded the game on Steam, they were surprised to find that they needed an Epic Games account to access online features.

Doing a little digging into the subject reveals that the inclusion of Epic Online Services isn’t necessarily breaking news, with Epic themselves posting about the game’s integration back in April via their development blog. Despite this the Steam page failed to mention the requirement for a third party account until after the game launched, with the developers posting what seems like a hastily-written response earlier today along with amending the store page itself.

Developer Response via Steam News said:
For this game, to enhance cross play and online functionality,
Online play requires signing in to your Epic Games account.
We apologize for the lack of advance notice.

Signing in to your Epic Games account is required the first time you play online.
Usually, once you sign in for the first time, you will not need to sign in again.

You can sign in to your Epic Games account or register for an account from within the game app.
Or you can create an account in advance and sign in.

While less impactful than a Sony account requirement, with Epic Games only unavailable “where prohibited by US law” according to their FAQ, it has left a sour taste for those previously excited for the game. This kind of third party account requirement is a first for the series, with many frustrated users on Steam commenting that it should have been optional for those wanting to use the new crossplay features, or at the very least disclosed so that they could have made an informed decision prior to their purchase.

Thanks to Steam’s refund policy extending to two weeks after a pre-ordered game has launched, those particularly disgruntled by the situation are able to get their money back.

Earth Defense Force 6 currently sits at a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam after 1300 reviews.

Steam should ban this game for not disclosing this and make any games that requires other launchers to be shadowbanned. If i ever try this series ill pirate them all.

I chalk this one up to the ignorance of Japanese devs when it comes to such things than any intention to hide things.
Not a excuse tbh, this is not their first game

Why are people acting like they don't have an Epic account?
I don't have one, most people don't unless they're piss poor, doesn't know piracy or are kids.

It's annoying, yep.

Much like folks buy RDR2 on Steam and still need to use the Rockstar launcher... Those dang launchers are everywhere.

Consoles offer an inferior experience, but I don't have to deal with the launchers
Ya say that but still have to log into a Rockstar Social for the online experience.

I believe this is their first game that has EOS integrated? I'm not defending it. I absolutely agree that this should have been disclosed right from the start. Rather, what I'm trying to say that it is more likely due to them not being aware of the the dislike that their western audience has for Epic than a malicious intention to hide it so as to lure people into buying it. That's to say, if they had known about the dislike, they would very likely have paid attention to disclosing it on the store page. Awareness of the controversy surrounding Epic is quite low in Japan due to PC not being the main focus.

As for steam banning, steam would first have to make it a requirement to disclose. Unfortunately, steam does not have such a requirement and merely makes it optional.

Steam at some point going forward should just ban third party launchers, no one likes them & they often cause issues with Steam Deck.

Maybe we go through a short period of X game not available on Steam, but they will come crawling back, they always do.
While I would love that, that absolutely would feel like a strong argument to hold against 'Monopoly' in the gaming market, if the companies pursued that (which we all know they'd dog pile Steam despite ALL of them doing exactly the same thing or we wouldn't HAVE these problems). Despite the fact to my knowledge none of the other patchers actually permits the reverse, which lol...

That's good to know actually, I've been on the fence with it for a while because of the launcher requirement. Anno is a stellar series.
it's worth it and the mod support is fantastic this is a rare case where i actually bought the game (when it was on sale with all dlc). get the steam version though. you still need an ubi acc but just log into it once than select auto login than you just sit back and let everything load afterwards. takes 2 mins on my machine to get to title screen and that's with 200 mods!

I mean, it's not the best, sure, but it's not the end of the world either.
It's free to make an account and as previously mentioned, most people already have one from all the freebies.

The game should have mentioned it already, but it's not like they were really hiding it either.
