Export your Pokémon animated models from 3DS to Unity Engine 3D
Hello folks! As I saw so many people complaining about it (even me), I'm here to post a tutorial on how to dump your files from Pokémon Sun and Moon and rip them so you can see them in Unity Engine. I don't really know if this should go here or in 3DS threads but as Unity is the aim of this tutorial, let's place it here and a mod may move it if needed.
Before you ask: Yes, this tutorial can be used for Unreal Engine, Godot, Roblox... and YES, this can be applied to Trainer, building models... you just need to locate and use the correct binaries and for now, use the traditional method for everything that is not Pokemon models. If you just need to export the models but do not want to use Unity, you can use my fork of 3DS2Unity to export in batch all the pokémon as GTLF. Then you can copy/import them into Blender, UE, Godot...
On the other side, the direct method is meant to be used with Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon binaries. Other games binaries might fail when importing with the direct method.
A brand new method came by hands of @opeious to directly import the models into Unity. This changes everything, since you no longer need to send them into blender (excepting for modifying something or fixing animations). Note that 3ds2unity method only applies to Pokémon models (what this tutorial is mainly for) and not environment...etc. Anyway, I'm dividing this post into 2 parts: "Traditional" and "Direct". Feel free to use the one you like the most. The preparation is the same for both methods. However, note that 3DSToUnity shader display requires Shader Graph. By default Universal Render Pipeline (URP) is used. If you are using either HDRP or legacyRP you need to make some tweaks explained in troubleshooting section below. In addition to having URP installed, check in Project Settings > Graphics that you have URP11+ asset assigned.
NOTE: KEEP IN MIND DIRECT MODE IS ONLY FOR UNITY AND IT IS FOR POKEMON BINARIES EXCLUSIVE. GODOT, UNREAL ENGINE, ROBLOX OR ANY OTHER ENGINE NEED TO KEEP USING THE TRADITIONAL. TRAINERS, MAPS AND OTHER MODELS NEED TO BE EXTRACTED BY THE TRADITIONAL METHOD AS WELL.
Note 2: As many people seem to be asking, if you get the ROM file from a different source than your own 3DS and cartridge, you can start at step 2 and skip 3.a.
Here we go!
First, we will follow the first three steps from @Rosieplier's tutorial for extracting the needed binary files. Please, go to the original thread for more info: (https://gbatemp.net/threads/wip-ult...okemon-models-textures-and-animations.490365/). Pokémon Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon are recommended as they follow the binary structure you will see in this tutorial.

BINARY TYPES PER BINARY NUMBER:
- 0.bin: Models (High Poly and Low Poly)
- 1.bin: Regular Textures
- 2.bin: Shiny Textures
- 3.bin: Grayscale and Emmisive Textures
- 4.bin: Battle Animations
- 5.bin: Overworld Animations
- 6.bin: Idle, Walk, and Run Animations
- 7.bin: Mouth Animations
- 8.bin: Empty / Extra data
BINARY NUMBERS PER MONSTER:
X/Y/Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire Pokémon models start in the 5th binary and use 8 binaries per monster, so discard the first 4 when parsing each mon.
E.G: Bulbasaur: 00004-000011
Note that 3DS2Unity does NOT support X/Y/OR/AS binaries. Use SUMO or USUM binaries.
To locate each mon in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, check this list (Sun/Moon require some modifications in the list, see below for more info):

PREPARATION
1. Dumping your game (source: https://3ds.hacks.guide/godmode9-usage.html)
For cartridge dumping:
a. Launch GodMode9 by holding (Start) during boot
b. Navigate to [C:] GAMECART
c. Press (A) on [TitleID].trim.3ds to select it, then select “NCSD image options…”, then select “Build CIA from file”
d. The .cia file will be outputted to the /gm9/out/ folder on your SD card
For digital dumping:
a. Launch GodMode9 by holding (Start) during boot
b. Hover over [A:] SYSNAND SD
c. Hold (R) and press (A) at the same time to open the drive options
d. Select “Search for titles”
e. Press (A) to continue
f. Press (A) on the .tmd file to select it, then select “TMD file options…”, then select “Build CIA (standard)”
g. The .cia file will be outputted to the /gm9/out/folder on your SD card
2. Extracting your game
a. I recommend HackingToolKit9DS (v12) for this. The thread on this software has its own guide, so I suggest following it here. Once you are done, move the extracted files to a separate folder.
NOTE: YOU NEED TO OBTAIN ExtractedROMFS FOLDER, NOT A BINARY. IF YOU OBTAINED THE BINARY, YOU DIDN'T DECRYPT THE ROM PROPERLY.
3. Getting the files
a. Turn off your 3DS and insert your SD card into your computer (Obviously, if you got the ROM elsewhere than your own cartridge, this step can be skipped, so continue to step 3.b ).
b. Download pk3DS if you haven't already from Kaphotics' repo (hover pk3DS option, click in the 3 dots > download artifacts): https://dev.azure.com/project-pokem...acts&pathAsName=false&type=publishedArtifacts. Maybe obvious, but you need to unzip it somewhere in your computer in order to use it.
c. This is optional, but if you want to do more than just texture edits, go to "File/Open.." and select the folder your extracted game is in. This allows you to edit encounters, trainers, game text and a lot more!
d. Open "Tools/Misc Tools/(un)Pack+BCLIM. Open a separate window of your extracted game folder, then go into "ExtractedRomFS\a\0\9. Drag "4" to the first box in pk3DS. DO NOT PRESS CTRL while doing this!
e. A new folder will be created called "4_g". Inside are all the,bin files listed below, with 5 digit numbers as their name. They need to have "dec_" in the name.
Note: The dec_ files are the one we will use in this tutorial. If you check the video you will see I use 0-8 bins. These are renamed binaries for a specific mon (Abomasnow). Take a look at the bottom of this post to check the numbers of each model. You could make a script that separates the binaries based on the pokemon they belong to.
4a. Ohana3DS/SPICA (Only for traditional)
a. Get Ohana or Spica from the original thread or from github.
- Spica: GDKChan's Github
- Ohana: Binary by Roseplier
b. Unzip it anywhere you want.
4b. 3DS2Unity (Only for Direct)
a. Clone/Download the repository from Github: https://github.com/opeious/Pokemon3DStoUnity. You can alternatively use my fork: https://github.com/Manurocker95/Pokemon3DStoUnity.
b. Copy it to your Unity Project (as always, inside Assets/ like any other asset.
c. If you want to use 3DS2Unity's materials and shaders, check you have URP installed from package manager and the render pipeline asset already set in Edit > Project Settings. Otherwise, you will need to make your own shaders assign everything in 3DS2Unity's window (see below). 3DS2Unity might fail when importing if shaders are not setup properly as materials can't be assigned to meshes when generating the Pokémon prefabs.
5. Unity Engine 3D Setup
a. Download Unity Engine from the official website.
b. Install it.
c. Open Unity and create a new project.
d (Only for Direct): The project needs to be Universal Render Pipeline, as the default shaders are made in Shader Graph. if you plan to use Legacy RP or High Definition Render pipeline, you will need to change the shaders later on.
If you created a built-in project and imported URP by the package manager, remember to create the URP asset and assign it to Project Settings > Graphics.
6. Blender (Only for traditional)
a. Download Blender from the official website.
b. Install it.
c. Download .smd plugin for Blender on Valve's website. https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Blender_Source_Tools
d. Open Blender and follow this steps:
a. Get photoshop. It's not free, so do it as you wish.
b. Install it.

EXPORT THE POKEMON
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Direct (3DS > Unity):
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a. Open your Unity Project with 3DS 2 Unity in it (Remember to have the 3DS2Unity code inside Assets and not having compiling issues).
b. Copy your binaries to the binary folder (by default "Bin3DS" folder so create it if it doesn't exist). Each mon should have its own folder inside binary folder. An example structure would be Assets/Bin3DS/Bulbasaur/0.bin.... If Bin3DS folder doesn't exist, create it. Remember you can change this path in the settings window.
c. In the toolbar > 3DSToUnity > Open Pokémon Binary Importer
d. The inspector will select a new Scriptable Object with a custom window:
e. Configure the settings with your needs and click on "Import".
d. You are done, all your models are saved in "Exported" folder and included in your scene.
If you need help with the binaries, check the binary types section below.
The settings window might change its appearance and options between versions, but the configuration is always 99% the same. Check these things in order to get the import working properly. Remember to click on "refresh" after changing the model import range, so the "Pokemon Merged Binary" list updates.
Lost already? Check this videotutorial I made in case it is more helpful:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Export models and animations
a. Open Ohana3DS.
b. Select File > Open and look for the Pokemon you'd like to export. Yes, you need to do it one by one.
c. Select the File 0. This is the model. It won't have textures nor animations.
d. Select (+) on Textures and click on Import. Select file 1 for normal textures or 2 for shiny textures.
e. Select (+) on Skeletal animations and import files 5, 6, 7. A play mode will allow you to play animations such as this:
f. Click on Models > Export
g. Set a name for the model, the path where the model will be saved and be sure SMD and Export with all animations are checked.
h. Click on Ok and the model will be exported in .smd format.
i. Now, select (+) Textures and export them in the same folder (the folder doesn't matter but it's better to have them all in one place).
j. Export one by one, every animation. You can play the animations and set a proper name for each one.
k. Open Blender and create a new scene.
l. Delete the cube, the lamp and the camera as they are not needed.
m. Click on File > Import > SMD Files > Select the model.smd
n. You will see the model already rigged in your scene.
ñ. If you export it now, the animations won't fit as it will think you have different rigging. However, this is fixed if you now import in blender all the animations. Scale the model and translate it to your desired transform after importing (as it solves issues that happen when doing so before importing the animations). Pokémon Models are rotated -90º in the X axis, so you will need to rotate it 90º in the X axis to get them properly rotated. Also, TPC made 3DS models in hectometers. If you are making a Pokémon game with real scales, you can downscale it now to 0.01 in the 3 axis.
o. You will see you can play just one animation but don't worry. Every animation is in your file. Now, export your model as .fbx.
2. Modify the textures
a. Open Photoshop and open albedo (color) textures with it. We need to duplicate the texture next to the original and mirror it. Game Freak uses shaders that only use half of the textures and mirrors them. (yeah, pokémon are simetric). Do it for every texture.
From this:
To this:
As this tutorial is meant to be used in Unity, you can either use Texture Mirroring option in texture settings or make a shader that mirrors the half textures.
The function for mirroring by shader (in case you want to do it instead) in X and Y axis is:
As you only need it for U and not V, you can modify the function for working on one axis.
a. Open Ohana3DS.
b. Select File > Open and look for the Pokemon you'd like to export. Yes, you need to do it one by one.
c. Select the File 0. This is the model. It won't have textures nor animations.

fixed4 col = tex2D(_MainTex, uv);
As you only need it for U and not V, you can modify the function for working on one axis.
IMPORTING INTO UNITY
a. Open the project we created during the preparation proccess.
b. Drag the .fbx exported from blender and the textures to the resources folder inside assets.
c. Select the model and change the Avatar definition from No Avatar to Create from this model. Drag the model to your scene.
d. Create a material for each texture and use the texture as albedo. Drag the materials to the model. (you can use the normal maps exported by ohana if you wish.
e. Open the fbx on unity and duplicate (cntrl+D) all the animations inside it.
f. Drag the animations to the controller window and set it to the animator component.
h. hit play and that's it!

TROUBLESHOOTING AND TRICKS
-SRP Tweaks for 3DS2Unity: From Unity 2021.2 and above (2021.3LTS, 2022LTS...), Shader Graph supports Built-in (Legacy) render pipeline and HDRP is out of beta. This means that URP is more or less no longer mandatory for using 3DS2Unity. However, some tweaks need to be taken into account:
1) You will need to set the Active Target to the shader graphs inspector from a URP project and then change them to your RP.
2) There's an issue outside SRPs where GetMainLight(index) method is deprecated and no available on Built-in. For this reason a small tweak need to be made in CalculateMainLight function, adding Light Direction, Light Color, Shadow Attenuation and Light Attenuation as Inputs to the function. You can set default values or make a script that sends this info to the shaders. With this being set, you will be able to use 3DS2Unity on built-in and HDRP without issues.
Example:
- Not animated parts: @reidarG pointed out that sometimes, some models like Bulbasaur or Blastoise have parts that are broken during some animations and it was due to the scale. Check if they have correct scale in the frames where they appear and disappear, because that might fix the animation.
- Spica animations are broken but Ohana ones aren't: You can export the high-poly model from Spica, export the animations with ohana and use the animations in the spica model without issues. This fixes Mega-Metagross animations that are not correctly parsed with Spica.
- How to setup real scale (in meters): It seems the pokémon company exported badly meters in hectometers, so the real size is 0.01 per axis. Pokémon Lets Go and SwSh use same models as 3DS. However, the scale in PLGPE is 0.025 (supposed to be inches).
- Some animations are deformed on export: (By ReidarG): Charmeleon's right shoulder MAY BE deformed in animation. To fix this, subtract weight paint on the right shoulder. Butterfree and Beedrill wings are broken upon import into engine. Not sure of a fix.
- Some models are not correctly imported: Yes, some binaries are not properly parsed by Ohana, Spica nor 3DS2Unity. Check the list made by Sceo to see what monsters are reported to be bugged: Excel List

Note that 3DS2Unity does NOT support X/Y/OR/AS binaries. Use SUMO or USUM binaries.
To locate each mon in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, check this list (Sun/Moon require some modifications in the list, see below for more info):
