Wow. The first post in this thread looked like spam, but still, yeah, it does look like this might be the new R4 (or a COMPLETE ripoff of R4). In any case, if it is a new R4, one wonders why they don't call it the new R4. R4 has name recognition, and N5 does not.

I found one Chinese site that's saying it's the second generation R4, but my ability to read Chinese is limited to my ability to read Japanese, so I can't read the actual detailed description.

lol not spam , mate

its box is the same as dstt

Lets face it, so far, there is no evidence regarding if this is the new successor to the R4, or a rip off.
1. Cart is physically identical (exception of sticker).

2. Site is virtually identical.

3. Firmware files almost identical..

4. Interface is completely identical.

I thought the EDGE might have been crap since it was so similar to the Cyclo but its quite awesome!
Heres the difference though: the EDGE is copying a great cart.

LOL, I love the name.

It's like they sat down and said "What's a name that we can give it that will sound almost exactly like R4 but won't get us sued?"

Letter + number = FLASHCART WIN.

I assumed that whoever came up with "R4" lifted the the letter + number convention from M3/G6. What goes around comes around I guess.

There many alibaba sellers for it, they say it's the same as R4
Also the firmware version seems to be the same
But this could easily be a bad clone, if it's a good clone(Supporting actual R4 firmware) many people will like it

I spoke to someone who got it(Reseller)
He says it isn't R4, it uses it's own firmware
And I asked if it's ok, he said so far so good
SDHC doesn't work he tested it, and it uses spring slot
He says it's just as good as R4, as what he tested

Not just hacked, there are only 2 bytes different -> R4->N5 text change. Awesome.

Don't mean any disrespect, I'm just curious - how did you arrive at that conclusion? (and no, I haven't run a binary diff on them yet - I'm meant to be working
biggrin.gif
).

The reason I ask is that your patcher works perfectly on the 1.16 R4 kernel, but barfs on the n5 1.16 kernel - it detects it as being for M3 hardware, then can't figure out what language it's meant to be for. If it was as simple as a two byte change I would have thought it'd work.

Also, do you have any idea what _AX_MENU.DAT in the n5 kernel file set is? Six meg - must be something pretty significant.

It's here. I'm almost 100% sure it's the new R4, probably now with SDHC support, because the sites of R4 and N5 have the EXACT same layout, plus the N5 already has firmwares 1.15 and 1.16. Only thing is the N5 website is still under construction as the "Products", "Developments", etc. tabs don't have links yet.

BTW here is the R4 website so you can compare. Also, check this out:

The n5DS Cartridge is the current top-of-the-line in DS SLOT-1 flash carts. It is just an amazing little device like original DS cart size, it is a complete solution with no need to purchase any additional components or deal with any messy software and truly the easiest media enhancer you have ever done; To simply put it, this is a must have peripheral for any regular DS/DS lite owner.

Notice any similarities?

In my opinion, N5 is just a poor clone of R4
Same FW Ver. and similar website = They're too lazy to make their own webpage.

If they can copy the cart, why can't they also copy website?

I put this firmware on a version 1 R4. It said "Loading" and wouldn't continue (or I didn't wait).

Then I replaced _DS_MENU.DAT with the R4 version and it loaded up to the main screen, with an N5 logo instead of R4. So it was just R4 but it said N5.

When I ran the N5 _DS_MENU.DAT as an NDS, it went to the main screen and then it locked up. When I tried opening _AX_MENU.DAT as an NDS it loaded for a long time, then I got two white screens.

Moonshell and _DS_MSHL.NDS seem to be the same as R4.

What stops the N5 loader from running on R4 I wonder. Is it _DS_MENU.DAT? Is it _AX_MENU.DAT? Are one or both of those two files detecting the firmware? Maybe when I ran N5 _DS_MENU.DAT as _DS_MENU.NDS, it couldn't continue because the _DS_MENU.DAT was R4, but that was the case I should have been able to load with it from the start.

The two _DS_MENU.DATs have the same size, but they are different somehow when I compare them in the hex editor. I don't understand the difference.
