With the two different versions of Minecraft available on PC--one of which being the crossplay compatible, easy to jump into, more stable Bedrock, or Java, which has so many mods that you could never dare count them all--which one do you prefer?

Java Edition:

  • Customize your own skin – You can download any skin online or make your own and upload it to use in game!
  • PC only – Java Edition will run on Windows, MacOS, and Linux
  • Mods – Download community made mods to change your gameplay experience
  • Resource Intensive – Java Edition requires higher computer specifications to run smoothly
  • No Cross-Play – Java Edition users can only play with other Java users
  • Community – There are countless online servers and communities with all kinds of variations and mods to change up the multiplayer experience

Bedrock Versions: Bedrock refers to any current non-Java Edition of the game.

  • Multi-Platform – You can play Bedrock Editions on Minecraft console, mobile and PC
  • Marketplace – Add-Ons or Skin packs can be purchased from the marketplace to change your gameplay experience
  • Cross-Play – Bedrock players can play with any other Bedrock player online
  • Runs Smooth – Bedrock Edition does not require powerful computers or devices to run and will often run more smoothly than Java Edition
  • Controls – Bedrock Edition has the option to switch to a controller for movement or touch controls if on a mobile device
  • Moderation and Parental Controls – Since Bedrock Editions are connected to Xbox’s services the online experience is more heavily moderated and parental controls can be finer tuned

And, if you still play Minecraft, would you have interest in picking it back up to play with your fellow GBAtemp users? :toot:

the features java offer are still far above what bedrock offers, like a set view distance slider, while bedrock has a dynamic one that scales with hardware
and for some reason higher render distances punt graphics cards way harder on bedrock than it does on java

you can also have shaders on java without REQUIRING an RTX card

Being that I am a Linux user, I pretty much only use Java. I have used Bedrock on my phone, tablet, Switch, and through an unofficial launcher for Linux but I am just more used to Java at this point.

I can't imagine most people here'd choose Bedrock over Java. On a site filled with the modder type, with a decent amount of dedicated PC users? Yeah.

But my pick's Bedrock. It runs much better on lower end PCs, and crossplay with users on mobile and console has come in handy multiple times. Java's cool, but Bedrock just works better for me.

I'm more used to Java, and I prefer the available mods, hands down.

But Bedrock is just so much nicer. I just wish they'd finally get mod support really going for it...

I like bedrock better, mostly because of crossplay and the achievments.
It's fun playing on the switch with a friend of mine, but goddamn, the starting menu crashes to many times while trying to load my windows char.

I've been playing minecraft since when the bedrock edition wasn't a thing- really. it was somewhere in 2012. - and I've also been playing on PC most of my life. Of course I played PE a lot too as a kid, but when they released the Windows 10 version of Minecraft... It just felt so off to me. the only pros I could see from that was being able to play with PE players, but that's all. I played it for few minutes, went "Nah, I ain't playing like this." and switched to Java edition.

I honestly prefer Java, even though it hurts me sometimes thinking how smooth Bedrock is on my PC, it's not worth the lack of choices for people that want to mod and just take advantage of the massive ecosystem of content for Java.

Java is just better in every way but Bedrock is fine too as long as you don't need anything beyond vanilla. It's nice that you can play the mobile version with people on other platforms.

Java has achievements too. They're confined to within the game but they still count.

If i had the ability to run it smoothly to, I would choose java. The switch version is... mediocre at best and a laggy, buggy mess at worst. I can't imagine how the other versions run
(also where's my boi legacy edition?)

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
