Gaming Is it worth buying a Wii U in 2020 even if I already own a switch?

One is my original stock one. The other one is a white model that i bought to put into my wii u Kiosk(Store Display) that i got from gamestop. The wii U will be expensive in the future as there was less the 15 million sold world wide. Im also a collector, so there is that.
Oh that's cool, I like kiosk setups, but wouldn't own one myself, unless I got a really good deal.

Isn’t that just the console? Don’t you need both the console and the remote part?
I think my friend is including both the wii u and the gamepad in that price, but I haven't asked yet.

lol have you ever even seen a Wii U? I've never seen the gamepad referred to as a "remote part".

This just doesn't look like a "remote part" to me

BTW got that pic off Amazon and just noticed, their prices for Wii U are through the roof.

If you want a wii u, well then I guess you're planning to hack it. As said already, it has compatibility for wii and gamecube games. The virtual console games can run some custom injected roms with some decent results for compatibility like N64 and DS. For emulators? Well retroarch is a thing, if you know anything about it, not all "Cores" or consoles emulated on it will be available for the wii u. ( I think it's system specific with pc and android having all access vs game consoles having limited access) You probably want to use this instead of virtual console injects, but only for systems that isn't supported by retroarch.

For wii u, SNES9X works well and has support for MSU-1 since it is version 1.60 Genesis plus gx is all you need for all things sega. (No 32X, not like that's a big loss compared to having Master system, Game gear, and sega cd.) Nestopia is good for nes games. There is quite a few to dig into that should run well unless is some kind of overpowered arcade game. Just make sure you have a decent size SD card for it. :ninja:

Other than those things, the rest of what you can do is probably play modded wii u games. (if any) I mean if you just want a system with old games to play on the gamepad, it helps. Especially if you don't want to use other devices while is charging or something. Or you can do like me and just have it play sound test from your favorite game so you have something to listen to when you're in the room. :P

If you want/like some sort of "I wanna play almost every Nintendo consoles" in one device, yeah, the Wii U comes ideal if it's hacked. From NES to Wii U (home consoles) and GameBoy to Nintendo DS (no multiplayer+no DSi) everything is great/plausible native played or emulated. With retroarch, a world of emulation can be expanded to another devices/consoles with the cross-platform netplay. I used to play multiplayer NES, SNES and arcade games via netplay between my Wii U-Switch or Wii U-Vita and it was pretty fun.
Behind scenes devs are still doing great things for the Wii U homebrew and I'm sure good stuff is coming for this fantastic console.

That's true, but I don't feel that good about homebrewing my switch as of right now, as it's my main system alongside my xbox one, so I don't want to accidentally get it banned.

I've already got a Wii, and I would be able to save money as a lot of Wii U games have been ported to switch, and I have only brought a few of those ports (Mario Kart, BOTW (depending on if you see it as a port or not), LEGO City Undercover), so I could still play some of the Wii U ports on their original software, without having to buy a $80 switch game.

I have but I don't really play it much anymore, and Wii U games look a lot better than Wii games imo.
I still think Wii games look great like Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess. Only limited by the Wii output resolution.

I would only get the wii u if it includes the gamepad. Because the gamepad separate will set you back a couple of bucks & you need it to run the wii u.

Thank you for the detailed write up. I've used retroarch before, on PC and on Switch with Lakka, but not much. I'd probably use virtual console injects for most games if they work well on the Wii U, if not, retroarch.

I'd like to try out Megadrive on the Wii U, so homebrew will be one of the first things I'd do if I got one.

Seems like the Wii U is good for emulation then, thank you! Also it's good to hear that the homebrew community is still fairly active for it.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, a lot of games on the Wii have still fairly good graphics, like the ones you mentioned there, but I think the Wii's graphics were also pretty bad from the start, with the 360 and PS3 already being way better with most games. I just think it hasn't held up fairly well when the console is in 480p when the world we live in now has things such as 4k. Maybe on an older TV with 480 it'd look decent, but running on a modern tv, it makes the image quality look pretty bad. I think some older pixelated games have held up, because it reminds me of Indie games, but 3d older stuff haven't held up so well.

Also, I wouldn't buy a Wii U without the gamepad.

Your best bet for injects is for Nintendo 64 or DS games. Though not all games will be 100% compatible. For genesis games, Retroarch for wii u does the job since it does use Genesis plus gx. Though the person who makes that emulator recommends using the wii homebrew version of it since it was originally intended for to be used on gamecube/wii. Lucky, you can do just that. Using the wii mode on wii u, you can install homebrew channel on there just like all the regular wii consoles and load the homebrew same way. Unless you want retroarch exclusive features, that's the best way to use the megadrive emulator. :ninja:

Thank you. I will try out N64 and DS if I get it. I ended up contacting my friend and he said he'd let it go for $65 if he's allowed, so I'll probably get it if I can. It won't bother me if I have to use Wii Mode for some things, as it's still running on a Wii U regardless. So you can pretty much install homebrew twice? On Wii U and Wii Mode?

I also want to point out that playing DS on your Wii U with the gamepad is as close as you get to the original experience without playing it on a DS/3DS since you've got the touch screen and controller in hand.

The Wii U is a great machine and definitely not replaced by the Switch as they do somewhat different things. Obviously, not every gamer is gonna find interest in playing the gamepad heavy games like Nintendo Land, Affordable Space Adventures, Star Fox Zero etc.

Also I'd like to tell you in advance that right now on the latest builds of retroarch on Wii U loading roms takes a very long time and is pretty tedious, which is why I stick to injected roms as much as possible. However, there's is currently being done work to fix this so hopefully we'll be back to having fast loading of roms and cores like in earlier builds.

I figure you've already found the games that interest you so I won't bother writing down what I think are games worth playing, also because I'm not sure what games you're after.

Yeah you can install it twice, but there isn't that much reason to homebrew your vWii side of the console except for some very specific scenarios. Like all the games for gamecube and Wii can be installed to the Wii U home menu without needing to go to the vWii menu first.

Thank you. I've got a DS Lite still, with an old DSTT Flashcart, and I've got a 3ds with a sky3ds+ flashcard (got before you could put .cias on 3ds) and also have .cias installed on it. But I'd still probably try DS on there because why not.

I'd try out Pikmin, Mario 3d world and Windwaker definitely, and probably others, even mario kart 8 even though I own it on switch. I just think most Wii U games were doomed at the start because of the hardware, so I find ports of Wii U games to switch to be a good thing.

Thanks for the headsup on retroarch, so I'll try injected roms where possible. If you think theres any good games on the Wii U to try, I'd be happy to try them out.

Thank you for this, I really appreciate it! I picked up the Wii U about half an hour ago with Nintendo Land and Skylanders included. It's updating now, I'm excited to use it.

Thank you, I will try this later, I just picked up the Wii U.

So you can pretty much install homebrew twice? On Wii U and Wii Mode?
Because the wii u supports 100% wii compatibility, yes you can install homebrew channel on the wii u "wii mode" (known to everyone as Virtual wii or vWii) It functions just like the original wii minus some obvious missing things (Gamecube memory card manager, wii connect 24 channels, internet settings obviously cause wii u os manages that) You can use all the same homebrew the wii has already this way. It's completely separate from the wii u homebrew and os. :ninja:

$45 for a wii U is a steal. The gamepad alone is worth $80. You should get it.
I ended up buying it, thanks, ended up being $65 AUD or around $41 USD so even better. Gamepad and everything, also came with a carrying case and NintendoLand and Skylanders.
Nice. totally worth

Yep. Already started homebrewing it! Don't regret buying it. I've only played the sonic allstars demo on it yet but I intend to get more games. Already brought Dr Kawashima for homebrew as well.

Great decision! Hope you'll enjoy it as much as the rest of us does. :)

One thing I want to say: Don't resell it after one week of using. Give yourself more time to learn how to master the system in a efficient way (remember: Wii U was a flopp officially. That (indirectly?) translates to the hacking scene beeing not as strong as it is for other consoles, so you simply need more time to figure things out). Also don't translate your Wii experience 1:1 to Wii U... For example you don't need to hack vWii und use whatever you use on your Wii to run backups: Installing GC and Wii games as VC injects is (in my eyes) a much better option.

Oh yeah, I don't plan on reselling it. I could if I really wanted to sell it on Ebay for around double the price I got it for, but I got it to play it, not to flip it. I've already started looking into VC injects for GC and Wii, but haven't done it yet, as I haven't got an external hard drive at the moment and also already have quite a few games installed on the NAND. I haven't hacked my vWii yet, and I've heard it's not necessary, so I probably won't do it.

I already enjoy it, and the gamepad is much more comfortable than I thought it would be. Only thing I don't like about the gamepad is the screen quality, tried playing Need for speed on the gamepad screen and crashed into a wall because I couldn't easily tell it from the road. It's also lighter than I thought. I also surprising like how both analog sticks are up the top, and I've played with xbox style ones most of my life.

It definitely won't become my main system, nor will it be played that much, but it was too good to pass up, and I'll get my money's worth.

USD $300 for used Wii U on Ebay, so I say you got a steal.
Dang, that much? That's the price of a new switch in america isn't it? On ebay Wii U's are around $150 AUD in Australia, around $100 USD.
