config setting 222? so it's not "black screen", it's "waiting on a screen where there is something written and an icon displayed"?

did you use that loader in the past?
the default setting should be 249 unless you used and edited the settings, or copied a pre-configured install to your SD (from someone else setting?)
please, delete the loader folder in apps, and reinstall it fully.
you need only 3 files : icon.png, meta.xml and boot.dol
all three files located in sd:/apps/usbloader_gx/ folder
you can find latest revision of that loader in my signature.

I had it installed a good few years back and had it given away. Only got it back recently. So i should delete all of it to start off?

I've been having real trouble trying to get USB Loader to work properly with my Wii games. Most of them show up with banners, while some don't at all. Even with that, only a couple actually run, while the others linger on a black screen. I've used Modmii to get the latest IOSs and used d2x to install the CIOS, but nothing has made it any better. None of the Wiiware installed on the emunand works either, despite all the wads I've teste so far working just fine on the system menu. I've checked the default loader and game settings (249/250 and 58 respectively), but it hasn't made any difference. All the Gamecube games work fine, so what am I doing wrong?

Hello.:)

Sorry to hear you have still Issues with your Wii Setup.
Your sysCheck looks good.

As I can read from your previous Posts you use an 2 TB USB HDD.
Can you please tell us how is it configured please ?

How is it formatted, are there one or more Partitions on it please ?
Did you connected it to the Port 0 ?
index.jpg

The Wii Games only work correct from Port 0.
Did you transferred the Games/ISO´s with the WiiBackupManager ?
Can you maybe tell us your USBLoader Settings - Loader Settings please ?
Your IOS and Game IOS Settings ?

Thank you for your Assistance.:)

The HDD is currently setup with FAT32 with 32k allocation, a single partition. It is plugged in to the bottom USB port when the Wii is horizontal. I obtained the ISOs through a combination of CleanRip and online downloads--mainly for the discs that were damaged--and converted them with WiiBackUpManager to wbfs.

As far as settings go, here is what USBLoader is set to currently:
Video Mode: Disc Default
Dol Video Patch: Off
480p Pixel Fix Patch: Off
Sneek Video Patch: Off
VIDTV Patch: Off
Aspect Ratio: System Default
Game Language: Console Default
Patch Country Strings: Off
Ocarina: Off
Private Server: Wiimmfi.de
Loader's IOS: IOS 58
Game's IOS: IOS 250 (Note: Same results happened with 249)
Quick Boot: Off
Block IOS Reload: Auto
Return To: Off
Nand Saves Emulation: Off
Nand Chan. Emulation: Full
Hooktype: None
Wiird Debugger: Off
Debugger Paused Start: Off
Channel Launcher: Main DOL

I don't believe the remaining settings are relevant as they have to do with other applications.

EDIT: Of the games I've tested, the only ones to work is Elebits and Rabbids Go Home. The others have either hung on the black screen. I'm gradually testing more, but I expect most of them will not work.

EDIT 2: Scratch Rabbids, it gets stuck on the initial save screen.

Can you please check with your HDD and WiiBackup Manager,
that you have installed only the Gamepartitions to the wbfs Files ?

Example of an Original ISO Structure:

Drat it, I installed all partitions! I had no idea that was something I needed to do!

Well...alright. By chance, is there any way to remove the extra partition from the file without having to reconvert? Due to the limited space in my computer and the large files unable to fit in FAT32, I...didn't keep the ISOs. I have a good part of them in another computer, but it would be more convenient to update what I already have, if possible.

Maybe another Way is to check your a Priiloader Setting (honestly I am not sure if it affects USBLoader GX..:().
In the "System Menu Hacks" please check

- Block Disc Updates - enabled

Maybe this helps.Please try it.
If this not works,I would suggest before you "reinstall" the whole HDD,try 2-3 Games and test it please.:)
(You can make again an ISO from your installed WBFS File with WiiBackup Manager).

Good Luck
Thank you.:)

I checked my Priiloader settings, 'Block Disc Updates' is already enabled. May I ask why USBLoader only accepts the Game Partition and nothing else?

It has nothing with "accepting" more if an Update is available on the Disc, the Wii tries always to make it first.
Because you have a modded Wii,the Game always thinks your Wii is not up to Date. And then comes the Black Screen, because Updates are blocked (and that is good so).So it is always better only Install the Game Partition.

The emuNAND Save "Black Screen" is also not your Issue, you have disabled this Option:
Nand Saves Emulation: Off

So there are not many Options left,to get Rid of your Black Screen Issue.:(

Thank you.:)

I set WiiBackupManager with the correct setting, and I'm reconverting the wbfs files with that. I could convert them all back to ISOs with the manager, actually, and I'll do that on a drive that can take them. Thanks for the help, and hopefully this will work.

Please, don't use "keep game partition only" in WBM.
this is a problem with Smash bros, which contains Other partitions, and therefore are not kept with that option.
The good option is "Remove update partition" so it keeps all others.

Partitions are only few MBytes (35MB to 200MB). you won't save that much if your drive is 2TB it's completely transparent, unless you have tons of ISOs. You seem to have less than 10 or 20. not that much of a difference on 2TB.
but, they are useless so you can delete them next time you add a game.

The update partition is completely ignored when launched from USBLoaders.
your console being updated or outdated has no effect and the black screen you experience are not linked to that.
Priiloader setting has also nothing to do at all. priiloader is a "system menu patcher", it patches the "disc channel", nothing else. if you don't launch the original disc using the disc channel, then priiloader has no effect at all. You can even completely skip the system menu at boot (if you have bootmii) and go directly into HBC and usbloaders, hence the complete "skip" of all these priiloader patches being completely useless to try to tweak for usbloaders.

Most of them show up with banners, while some don't at all. Even with that, only a couple actually run, while the others linger on a black screen.
I obtained the ISOs through a combination of CleanRip and online downloads
the only ones to work is Elebits and Rabbids Go Home.
Are these three quotes the same problem?
I mean, re the game which show banners the one you dumped yourself from cleanrip, and are by chance elebit and rabbids?
or nothing related between cleanrip, banner and working games?

Scratch Rabbids, it gets stuck on the initial save screen.
Saves are stored on NAND. if it hangs on here, it's most likely a cIOS base issue. maybe that game needs a specific base? try both 249 and 250 for that game.

It has nothing with "accepting" more if an Update is available on the Disc, the Wii tries always to make it first.
Because you have a modded Wii,the Game always thinks your Wii is not up to Date.
Compleletely false and irrelevant.
First, having a hacked wii, the console does not think it's outdated. it can even be "more updated" than last official versions.
when you install a cIOS, you choose the version.
he has "65535" as version, which is MORE updated than the last official 65280 from nintendo.

Second, the Wii does not check the update partition "FIRST" when launched from USBLoaders.
USBLoaders are booting the boot.dol from the game partition directly, and don't care whether an update partition is present or not. It has zero effect on backups. the only constraint it has, is the free space on your drive, that's all it can affect you. the update partition will never be accessed in any ways possible.
And then comes the Black Screen, because Updates are blocked
again, not the case, can't happen when launched from USBLoaders (even from original disc).
when launch from original disc using the disc channel, the partition might not be skipped, but the "version check" function always return "up to date", and the game boots.
it can only be stuck on black screen, or actually reboots to sysmenu, if your console is missing the requested IOS, you skip the update partition so it doesn't install it, the game can't boot without that IOS and reboots. (same as when using an empty cIOS slot, or a stub one, in USBLoaders)
what you describe is half true, and only happening from disc channel !

(private joke: you need me to go to mars, right?)

I could convert them all back to ISOs with the manager, actually,
It was useless to do that.
WBM work perfectly fine with .wbfs files too.
you could have just copied to PC if you wanted to "re-transfer without update partition".

Here are another "proper way" to use that program if you already have the games installed :
https://gbatemp.net/posts/7592791
It will properly move and rename all files to proper folders and filenames in 2 seconds without moving the files back and forth to PC.

Or if you want to change the drive, you actually plug both HDD.
in WBM, you have 2 tabs (drive1 drive2)
then you check games from drive1 tab, and select "transfer to > Drive 2", it will move and do the "partition removing" at the same time without the extra step to your computer.

None of the Wiiware installed on the emunand works either, despite all the wads I've teste so far working just fine on the system menu.
So, you also use emuNAND?
Did you make a full NAND dump from your console, or created a clean new empty NAND from Modmii?

I didn't suggest anything yet, it was mostly questions or proper settings?
I'm not sure what the problem is.

if only few games are working, it's not the HDD itself.
It can be the ISO (if it's consistent based on the one he dumped himself, and the one he got on the net)
it could be the file is write protected on FAT32 (very rare, but I always remember that issue)
not even speaking about emuNAND channels not working at all. maybe he didn't make a full NAND dump?

he didn't tell if the "channel already installed on NAND" before doing the dump were working on emuNAND.

IOS249[56] (rev 65535 Info: d2x-v10beta52): Trucha Bug NAND Access USB 2.0
IOS250[57] (rev 65535 Info: d2x-v10beta52): Trucha Bug NAND Access USB 2.0
IOS251[58] (rev 65535 Info: d2x-v10beta52): Trucha Bug NAND Access USB 2.0
He could try to replace d2x v10 with d2x v8?
like jeannotte said, some users have better luck with HDD detection using v8.
but I doubt it'll change a thing as some games are working, so the cIOS are detecting the HDD with v10.
there's no cIOS code change about game loading, only HDD init.

what's busing me (that's not the word, right? sounds wrong) is the fact he said some games didn't even have animated banners at all?
Most of them show up with banners, while some don't at all.

what do you mean by "not at all" ?
it's blank ? it's wrong game (known bug reported by users)? or the game is skipped and not listed?
Did you try other "GUI layout"? I prefer using "List layout" with game covers instead of animated banners.
Press 1 on wiimote to open cover download menu and get all missing pictures.

I'll make sure to try that, as I discovered that it made little difference on the success rate of the games. I didn't make all the files back to ISOs, as I didn't have enough space anywhere for that.

I mean, re the game which show banners the one you dumped yourself from cleanrip, and are by chance elebit and rabbids?
or nothing related between cleanrip, banner and working games?

I've been testing more of the games, and so far, all of the ones to not work properly are ones I dumped myself. The ones I downloaded online--with the exception of Elebits and Rabbids, those I dumped myself--all work.

Saves are stored on NAND. if it hangs on here, it's most likely a cIOS base issue. maybe that game needs a specific base? try both 249 and 250 for that game.
I'll look into it a bit more. I can try making the save file with the disc channel first and see if the game goes beyond that, as the issue is when it is creating the save file to begin with.

So, you also use emuNAND?
Did you make a full NAND dump from your console, or created a clean new empty NAND from Modmii?

I made an empty NAND with ModMii, but the instructions told me to move it to the SD card afterward, and I specifically wanted it to be in the USB as there wasn't enough space inside the SD for all the wads. I dumped the NAND with USB Loader afterward, and the wads are in a similar state to the Wii games, despite the ones I've tested so far working perfectly fine when installed in the system menu. Would it work if I move this empty NAND to the folder of the dumped NAND, replacing it entirely?

what do you mean by "not at all" ?
it's blank ? it's wrong game (known bug reported by users)? or the game is skipped and not listed?
Did you try other "GUI layout"? I prefer using "List layout" with game covers instead of animated banners.
Press 1 on wiimote to open cover download menu and get all missing pictures.

The games are listed, and the covers and disc art appears. When in the Channel Layout, it is a blank box, and when the game is selected, it's channel music doesn't play, and--with the Banner Animation GUI--it is a static black screen. Most of the games have the animations, but whether or not they work varies. All the ones without the animations don't work though.

EDIT: I should mention that the games downloaded were acquired in an ISO format and transferred to WBFS using WiiBackupManager, just like the ones I ripped.

black animated banner usually means the loader couldn't even load the ISO. it's a bad dump.
you'll have to redump these games, if I understood correctly only the one you dumped yourself are not working.

Instead of using CleanRIP to get a full iso, just insert the disc when you are inside USBLoaderGX.
they will be dumped directly in wbfs format, without the update partition.

There's a report that 1272 has a freeze bug when dumping a game.
try with 1271 instead. or 1268 (last know stable, it's actually the one I'm using myself)

apparently some games with animated banners don't work too ?
maybe they are also bad dump, but the part where the banner is located might be accessible.
I recommend you check the game's validity inside WiiBackupManager (select the game, option, sha1) if it's green it's good. red it's bad.

I'll check the dumped games when I get home. If they're bad, I'll dump them through the loader. Thanks for the help. I'll need to get my emuNAND working, but I can read into other threads if I need to.
