BioWare to rework on 'Anthem' with 'substantial reinvention'

anthem.jpg

In a blog post from yesterday, Casey Hudson, General Manager at BioWare, announced that the developers will rework on their sci-fi online shooter Anthem to "reinvent the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges and progression with meaningful rewards". He has also admitted that "there’s still more fundamental work to be done to bring out the full potential of the experience, and it will require a more substantial reinvention than an update or expansion."

Released on February 22, 2019 Anthem had a bleak reception, with a score of 61 on OpenCritic and 59 on Metacritic. Not even a year after its release, the developers are already working on giving the game a massive overhaul " to bring out the full potential of the experience". Current players don't have to worry about their game going on hold as Hudson writes that "we will continue to run the current version of Anthem, but move away from full seasons as the team works towards the future of Anthem. We’ll keep the game going with events, store refreshes, and revisiting past seasonal and cataclysm content – starting with our anniversary towards the end of the month".

Do you think that Anthem will be reborn to give a more compelling experience like with Final Fantasy XIV and No Man’s Sky?

Ah ic he was referring to the vanilla XIV that was out in 2010 basically before Realm Reborn. Yeah the mogstation is generally there for those who missed out on seasonal event cosmetics aswell, but have to pay for it. However you can get them free if they are live ingame like the current Valentine event thats happening now.

I find it bizarre to praise a mandatory sub game for minimizing its cash shop and not considering empty zones to be a serious content issue. (Particularly infamously copy-pasted empty zones.) Or that horrible combat wasn't an absolutely fundamental issue that prompted a total redesign of all gameplay like Anthem might need. Or that a game has grown very much around raiding isn't a live service. Its just a live service done right, after it was done very poorly on release and became a ghost town that would've been even more deserted if they had maintained the subscription during that period. I don't know that Anthem can ever be as "good" as FFXIV but it just goes to show that you can recover absolute disasters with sufficient resources, vision, and a bit of humility.

Anthem is at its current state because of poor management (ex. game being rushed out to the public, no game direction, etc...). Surprised Bioware (well mostly EA) still want to give this game another chance despite several devs who worked on this game left.

Thought EA just gave up on this game after the massive failure that it was.
Seeing which company it is, the "rework" is gonna be more "micro"transactions and dlc, season passes and whatnot.
Let's not forget the "surprise mechanics".

Name an MMO that don't have one as an alternate revenue method since WoW. One that hasn't died already. I'll wait. Go on. Now name one that doesn't have that store mentioned in-game at all.

>and not considering empty zones to be a serious content issue. (Particularly infamously copy-pasted empty zones.)
>Or that horrible combat wasn't an absolutely fundamental issue that prompted a total redesign of all gameplay like Anthem might need.

"XIV's problems were a horrible combat engine, graphics that were overkill/murder even by some of this generation's standards (POTS AS DETAILED AS A FULL CHARACTER), and it was EMPTY ZONES. Hell, their problem wasn't even Cash Shop!"

>"Or that a game has grown very much around raiding isn't a live service."

Y'know every MMO, every subscription game, is a "live service", right? The issue here isn't games as a service, but the approach there-in.

>"Its just a live service done right, after it was done very poorly on release and became a ghost town that would've been even more deserted if they had maintained the subscription during that period."

Now, I may be reading this wrong, but XIV 1.0 launched in September 2010. They suspended subscriptions as of December 2010.. Yoshida took over the same month and announced 2.0 a year later in December 2011.. AT THE SAME TIME as of January 2012 they continued subscriptions because they had no choice if they hoped for XIV 2.0/ARR to launch.

So no, people did not desert more, they did eventually continue the subscription model.

>"I don't know that Anthem can ever be as "good" as FFXIV but it just goes to show that you can recover absolute disasters with sufficient resources, vision, and a bit of humility."

The humility part's the problem. XIV is humble. They realized their failures early on in 1.X, quickly aimed to resolve them and brought in Yoshida in ~3 months after launch and agreed to a massive relaunch within a month of that when ARR started hard development (January 2011).

They didn't keep their subscriptions going until necessary. They never had their cash shop front and center. They at most had merchandise sales front and center (I got a fat cat plushy for my lil sis, waiting for her to leave the hospital, to make a point). They would constantly apologize for the smallest problem, and sometimes go above and beyond to add little things like UMBRELLAS. I ain't saying they're perfect, and it may be a cultural difference, but Anthem has a 0% chance of success afterwords. At most you'll get some hardcore fans, and people will drop off it like a brick due to being exhausted of cash shop functions. Y'know what game is also like that? Destiny/2.

They're basically going the way of Destiny 2, watch. They'll start with decent amounts more content, then over patches they'll invest more and more content into the cash shop until you get maybe 1/5th if not 1/10th the amount of loot you use to from major content releases because all of it's cash shopped.

I don't think it's going to work. Sure, there are examples of online games that turned it around (XIV and Destiny 2, as people mentioned), but that involved good timing, communication between fans and developers, and continuous improvements of the game. Anthem so far was the complete opposite of that - the game is in state of neglect for months at this point, people behind the game don't respond to anyone much, and it's a little too late at this point.

Kinda crazy how the downfall of Bioware after being bought out by EA mirrored the downfall of Blizzard after being bought out by Activision. And they both start with a "B" too. Illuminati confirmed.

More like greedy publishing corporations draining subcompanies doing the real work confirmed.

Damn it! I like to buy my brother gag gifts for Christmas! Last Christmas I bought him that shitty Shaq Fu remake for 5 dollars on Switch. This would have been a perfect second game to buy him for Christmas, since it was 5 dollars. I forgot all about this game, lol.

Lazy ass devs are to blame, that's why
Nah, afaik, it was more like nobody had a clear goal of what they wanted to do with this thing.
EA just wanted a destiny clone for the moneeeey, and Bioware had multiple people in charge each going in different directions regarding what they had in mind for the "game", until only during the elenth hour they finally decided for "something", and after lotsa crunch, what came out was... shite, eh.
I guess the devs are partially to blame for this, but would say its mostly EA's fault, 'cus EA is the worst of the worst.

As a rule of thumb, never blame developers for laziness unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're talking about. They're the ones who usually bust asses off trying to salvage a sinking project.

I'd recommend reading some articles on unfortunate development of Anthem - long story short, devs went into Anthem understaffed, overworked, undertrained for online-based games, burned out after Mass Effect, and suffocated by unrealistic demands on top of that, which is why the game ended up sucking. If anything, the only reason the game ended up being somewhat playable in the first place is because ridiculous effort was put into polishing whatever they could.
