Hello!

I have a few very simple questions:
  1. I understand that once I have custom firmware installed, I can install multiple cia files. However, can they be saved to the sd card to save space?

  2. If so, would it make sense to have a lot of games on multiple sd cards? e.g. one marked A-I, one marked J-P, and one marked Q-Z?

  3. For such a setup, do I have all of the cfw files and whatnot on each card or just the installed games?
I usually like to dabble in a ton of different games rather than beat any one, so I'd kind of like to have them all setup and ready at the beginning.

Thanks!

Yes - that is actually the only place they are saved. Very little is actually done to the main system NAND (unless you want it to be).

Yes, but take it from me - the top 300 games (according to metacritic), which also happens to be the maximum number of titles the 3DS can display in its native launcher, takes up around 220GB after installation. So a single 256GB SD card (like $60 on sale) will be all you ever need.

  1. For such a setup, do I have all of the cfw files and whatnot on each card or just the installed games?

There are ways to copy *some* CFW files onto the system NAND, but by default you will need to have a copy of the CFW on every SD card you use.

For slightly faster load times using 128 GB or bigger capacity, see 64 KB cluster size

Excellent! I've read that load times can be bad for sizes great than 32gb, but do you feel like the change in cluster size largely addresses the issue or is it still pretty noticeable? Similarly, would you personally rather have one or two very large ones or multiple smaller ones?

Thank you for your thorough response! This is exactly what I needed to know. I just picked up on a New 3DS XL on eBay yesterday :)

In my post #3, I fixed the address to the 2nd link ("Weird Problem..."). There are a lot of previous threads listed there that talks about large SD cards with 64 KB cluster size.

400gb sd cards come at a good price point ($60 not on sale) especially compared to the 512gb cards ($80 not on sale).
You can also swap your 3ds 300 titles with another 300 tiles via godmode 9 scripts

I've done this and feel like I have all the titles I need/would ever play
edit: for some reason I remember 512gb cards being more expensive

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Booo.

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
