Tesla - The Nintendo Switch Overlay Menu

fhwyjbd.png

Hey all.
I'd like to introduce to you, Tesla: My answer to the growing need for proper ingame front ends for sysmodules.

What is this?

  • Tesla consists of three individual parts. nx-ovlloader, the Tesla menu and libtesla.
    • nx-ovlloader is basically nx-hbloader ported to run as a sysmodule. It runs in the background and loads overlay NROs (.ovl files) given to it.
    • Tesla Menu is the equivalent to the hbmenu. It's the initial thing loaded by nx-ovlloader and acts as a hub for you to select all other overlays.
    • libtesla is where it becomes interesting for developers. It's an easy to use library that handles layer creation, UI drawing and all the overlay UX. It makes it very easy to create a new overlay for anything
  • A frontend for sysmodules that before required either a homebrew or a config file to change settings or used sounds or the LED to give the user feedback.

What is this not?

  • A tool that lets you create overlays that are always visible. Overlays can get unloaded way to easily for this.
  • An excuse to port absolutely everything to a overlay. Nobody's going to need a title manager overlay. If you consider making a overlay, keep it simple. You don't have a whole lot of memory to work with.

How do I use this?

First of all, download the latest release of nx-ovlloader and the Tesla Menu from the GitHub Release page and extract it onto your SD card.
After a reboot, hold down L and DPad Down and push on the right joy stick to bring up Tesla at any time. Navigation works as you imagine it.
Similar to normal homebrews, you place your .ovl files in the /switch/.overlays folder on your SD card.

Notice

Make sure to use the latest Atmosphere release when trying this as older versions ( as the one SX OS uses too ) probably won't have enough memory available for this to run. Overlays do take a lot of space so nx-ovlloader reserves 6MB. 2MB for framebuffers and around 4MB for overlay developers to use in their overlays.

Pokemon screenshots...sigh. Displaying something awesome on top of a rotting corpse its killers are demanding ever-increasing amounts of money for.
This is not the right thread to talk on our opinions about Pokemon. I will say I have mixed feelings about Sword/Shield but there were parts of it I really liked and I overall enjoyed it. Just wish there was more of it, and the DLC just feels like content they cut from the game to release it as DLC later, because the games are so short. They're definitely not bad games, they're just not anywhere near as good as they could (some would say should) be. It's kind of to be expected from Game Freak though. Still disappointing of course, but not surprising at all.
I second this
Thirded. That would definitely be a better use for the long press power, and anything the quick settings menu does already could be added to Tesla.
It would be nice to have some extra settings too, such as wifi settings and airplane mode easily accessible from within Tesla. And maybe an easy way to sync JoyCons would be nice so you don't have to go to "(JoyCon icon)->change grip/order" in the home menu every time. Maybe there is an easier way and I'm just dumb.

Would it be possible to have sys-clk with this? Would be amazing to be able to tweak on a fly without having to edit the ini.

Im using lates tatmosphere (9.1 fw), but i can't seem to open the overlay menu... Can it conflict with other sys modules? I currently have sys-clk, sys-con and ftpd, all work, but this one.

Did not work for me either when I used Pro controller. Try attached Joy-Cons.

I initially used it with joycons in handheld mode (original joycons, not 3rd party if it makes sense). Still nothing happens when i push hotkeys for tesla to come up.

Question: Is this designed specifically for handheld-mode only, without the intention to be used while docked?

I ask purely because I can only get it to open in handheld mode. Also only seems to open with the joycons, and only while they are attached. Anyone else having a similar issue?

That's a good point, wouldn't be able to open this with a GameCube controller.

That's indeed a bug I forgot to take care of. I'll release a new version as soon as I added that!

Ftp's working just fine here. Make sure you're using the latest atmosphere release

i am using the latest atmos and latest sys-ftpd from here https://bsnx.lavatech.top/sys-ftpd/
As soon as i copy the sys-ftpd title folder into contents, the Tesla won't work after reboot...and vice versa, it works without sys-ftpd just fine.
