Playing TMNT on the MAME core of RetroArch Wii results in garbled text like this. The game's graphics are fine, but the text is all messed up. Other games like Pac-Man look completely fine which makes me think this is a compatibility issue.

Can changing any settings help? and/or is there a compatibility list somewhere?

I think you're using an outdated retroarch core. IIRC mame 2000 had that issue.
You have to use wiimpathy's mame 2003 plus cores.
Go to this thread , you will find a compatibility list and all the needed info and links

I can play those just fine using MAME Wii.
KONAMI, SEGA and other's has troubles with RetroArch.

I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S ALLOWED TO SHARE SCREENSHOTS
BUT THESE ARE THE ROMS I CAN PLAY IN MAMEWII:

Thanks for the reply Interstella5555, but just to be clear - when you say you can play them just fine, you mean that the text appears clearly for you? I can indeed play the game and the graphics display correctly, it's just that the text is garbled.

Yes. Perfectly playable on MAMEWii.
No garbage text. No sound issues... nothing.
It must be only me because I constantly see people asking how they can play Captain America and the Avengers
XMEN The Arcade Game
TMNT
TMNT 2

I can play all those just fine with MAMEWii.
Take a look at the screenshots I've uploaded.
Sometimes MAMEWii won't load one rom, you need to have multiple versions of the same rom in order to play the rom.

For instance:
KOD (King of Dragons) won't load at all in MAMEWII but will on CPS1core using Retroarch... only that it has Parallax scrolling problems UNLESS YOU ADD
KOD
KODB
KODU
And only then you can play KODU just fine. It won't load if you don't have those other two,

Is more like trial and error.

Oh I just noticed Tetsuo Shima's reply. I'll look into that and see what I can find. Thanks again guys.

Edit: Sorry for my boneheadedness, but which of these cores is meant to replace the MAME core I've been using?

Edit 2: Nevermind, just found the ReadMe files. I didn't see them in the zip within the zip.

Well, you may need all of them, depending on the games you wish to play. Mame 2003 plus has been splitted into multiple cores due to the wii limited memory.
It mah be a little complicated to set it up initially, but performances and compatibility are spectacular.
Mame Wii is good too, but it's a very obsolete homebrew and not on the same level of mame 2003. It may be good for some lightgun games, though.

Yeah about it requiring some setup, figured that's the case. I don't have time right now so I just tried a really fast copy/paste job, tried to load TMNT with the core it's listed compatible with (coreE), and it didn't work.

I'll read up on how to set it up properly and figure it out when I have time in a few days. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
