The latest Sonic movie trailer gives us a look at a baby Sonic

While the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie is being made in the west, Japan is marketing the film and dubbing it for their own audiences. They even got their own exclusive trailer, which shows us more of movie-Sonic and his recently revamped design. With music playing from Sonic Mania in the background, Sonic races through a realistic Green Hill Zone, in a short film teaser. Halfway through the video, the footage cuts to a pint-sized baby Sonic who is holding up a flower. Paramount Pictures Japan shared a render of this little creature, primed to take all memes and spotlight away from the current reigning baby character, Yoda. Sonic the Hedgehog will hit theaters in North America on February 14, 2020, and Japan on March 27th.

You know just because it's a baby something doesn't mean it's competing against other baby versions otherwise baby Yoda would first have to go through all the baby Nintendo characters. Anythings better the the old trailer sonic, movie looks almost completely different then the original

I don't like this, what is the point of it? did the script change? what is even the sonic movie.
Let me explain, by the sounds of it the sonic movie is about sonic living on "our world" and what we can presume eggman going after his powers. And him leaving mobious was maybe idk, a 3-4 scene thing to get the plot started.
So now that there is... this.... does that mean that we are going to see sonic as a child? and if so what is the point of seeing him as child. What significance does it bear on the plot? If it has no significance on the plot then I may be a bit... jaded.

Everything in writing is placed for a reason. Even usually light hearted stories that disregard the material it's supposed to be based on. You don't make characters struggle unless it is part of their arc. But it also means that as a writer you often try to only include what is important, not extraneous side details or else your leaving open strands for a incomplete story. So if the movie is focused on why sonic is sonic... or there is some sort of childhood trauma or perhaps we have to go back to the past to see sonic's motivation for what he is doing as a adult. then it makes 100% sense. But if it doesn't do that, aka this child segment is fluff, then it's unnecessary and adds nothing to the plot or our understanding of sonic.
