[Concluded] Ocarina of Time Online - Friday Game Night

oot online banner.jpg

Welcome one and all to yet another Friday game night, an opportunity to mess around in a pile of fellow tempers and earn a cool 35xp on the site while you're at it. Our last outing was with Super Mario 64 Online, and while my soul broke in ways I didn't realize were possible, the event seemed to go over well with people. Continuing in that theme, we now have Ocarina of Time Online up on the docket, a special hack of the classic game which allows multiplayer progression. Key items collected by one player are given to all players in the server, and you can interact with one another in various ways.

As for how to get things up and running, first download the Ocarina of Time modloader here.

You'll need a v1.0 of the game, which I obviously cannot provide here for legal reasons, and it needs to be put in the directory 'OotModLoader_1.1.4_BETA_Client_win64\rom'

Upon launching the executable, you'll then be met with this screen:

Make sure the game is pointing to your ROM's location correctly. You'll also want to set some custom colors for your Link's tunics in the customization tab. Don't mess with the lobby name or password, instead head over to the lobby browser, and search for the lobby that will be created once we begin streaming. The name will be "Meteor's Moist Pit" and the password will be "GBAtemp". After joining the lobby, you should be good to go.

Right now we're doing a vanilla run, but since this mod will also work with the current OoT randomizer, it's possible to do an online randomizer run sometime in the future. Look forward to that. ;D

So when does one need to tune in to join? The stream will be starting at 5pm central time, so come join us on our official Twitch channel and say hi. Even if you just participate in chat instead of playing, you'll still net the 35xp.

Make sure to enter the command '!xp' during the stream to get your xp, and make a post here with your Twitch name, if it's different from your 'temp name.

Something I don't understand. For a site that condones piracy , you sure make a lot of events that require pirated versions of games. Wheter or not you provide the roms doesn't matter , you're still actively promoting that people go ahead and pirate roms... Why is it that its ok to promote this , while moderators constantly try to pretend that this site isn't 100% about piracy.. It started about piracy , lives because of piracy ..
I mean, digital backups of your own titles are, to my knowledge, not illegal. We've held two events so far which involve emulation, one for Super Mario 64, and now for Ocarina of Time, and both are games for which I don't consider it a wild stretch of the imagination for many users to own. Besides, what we're trying to showcase here are the mods, not any kind of piracy, which I'd consider pretty on-brand for the site. We're no more promoting piracy than we are buying the games and dumping them yourself. If you decided to pirate in order to acquire these games, that'd be a decision entirely on you, and not something we encouraged, either implicitly or outwardly.

As an aside, GBAtemp has technically lived for years without any piracy, and even if we were to suddenly embrace that angle, it would likely do more damage to the site and the community than good.

Edit: How do I know I got my XP?

You say "for a site that condones piracy", "you sure make a lot of events that require piracy". Where is the contrast here? There's no point made here without two opposites.
Shouldn't it either be "for a site that discourages piracy", or "you sure make a lot of events that require legitimacy" for either?

Because it is as you quoted, "isn't 100%". A good chunk of the use of this site is piracy yes, but that isn't what it is about. You can observe this immediately with the launch of a new console. A good majority of members already become satisfied with homebrew when it launches on said console, without there being any possibility of piracy as of such period. Modding is mostly the primary focus and what gives most of this site's life force, piracy is an extension of it that users may or may not choose to undertake.

And because it's undeniable that almost everyone with capability undertakes some form of piracy from time to time, it is natural you see this site front paging SX OS for example. Only to cater to vested interest, but you will never find piracy itself.

Think of this site as a weapons shop, but that doesn't sell weapons, nor permits, nor info where to get them. The site only gives you the info of the weapons and how you would use it. This is a kind of implication in a way, howsoever staff may like to deny that, but the fact remains that this weapons shop is just like the little pharmacy in a large supermarket. Hundreds go to the little pharmacy, but the little pharmacy is not the focus of the supermarket.

With all that said, these are ancient games. There is no harm done with piracy of N64 roms, unless Nintendo wants to cash in on those old games with virtual consoles. You're not depriving the devs of anything, it could even be said that they would appreciate you're finding new ways to enjoy their game.

I’m almost certain I saw your name on the list of users I set to give XP to. I’m on my phone currently, but I’ll be certain to double check in about an hour—thanks for letting me know.

EDIT: Re-did the XP, those who joined in, did you get a little alert showing the XP you got?

I got mine at 11:13 AM.

Edit: It doesn't show on my XP transaction log though, maybe that's why people think they didn't get it?

I feel everyone will be trying to do the glitch to go from the first dungeon to the end.
What, wrong-warping? I did watch some saucy rascal pull a mido skip right before my eyes, CHEATING US ALL, but nobody had tried to wrong-warp yet. Though maybe it's just a matter of time?
We're planning on continuing this same run again, likely this Friday, so who knows what'll happen.
