Rockstar releases its very own games launcher for Windows

In case you were looking for yet another games launcher for your PC, more specifically, for Rockstar games, you've been served! Launched today, the aptly-named Rockstart Games Launcher is your new gateway for anything Rockstar on Windows.

This brand-new launcher now allows you to access your PC Rockstar games across both digital and disc-based titles including ones purchased from various other digital stores. Additional features include the addition of cloud save functionality to all supported titles, the ability to keep your Rockstar Games PC library updated automatically, and ways to follow all the latest Rockstar Games news from directly inside the Launcher.

As an incentive for you to download this launcher, Rockestar is giving away for an unspecified "limited time" a free copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on PC within the Rockstar Games Launcher, to permanently add it to your Social Club account’s library.

so every developer that wants DRM on PC games should have to comply with steam's terms?

They can comply with MY terms which is that I don't want a different launcher for every goddamn publisher out there. If you make your future games exclusive to this I'll be sure to skip them.

So whens everyone gonna scream and cry about this one? Or is it okay because it doesn't have Fortnite on it?

Apparently the Steam versions are getting updated to require installation of this launcher as well. In the words of Charlie Brown, "good grief".

let's pretend that whining gbatemp members aren't lying and actually do have the willpower to not play any games that aren't on steam.
i am not convinced that this represents most players. both overwatch and fortnite have millions of players and borderlands 3 is selling great, proving that a game can still sell.
even having temporarily exclusivity is a big advantage because most people buy the game when it first comes out. so i guess you in order to convince developers, have to extend your stubbornness to not buy any games that have ever been on any store other then steam.
as long as developers are making less money by putting their game on steam, more and more will put them on other stores. so forward your complaints to valve if you wants the games back on steam or tell the developers to remove the DRM.

if only it was possible (or easy) to disable updates for games on steam. this is just one of the problems with steam that valve won't be pressured to fix unless there is competition.

dammit, just like ugay did to the old ac games.

What these launcher Nazis don't realise is that steam isn't just a platform for downloading and launching games, it adds all sorts of controller support, in home streaming between devices, has "Big Screen" for TV interface and most importantly is integrated with wine and vulkan for gaming on OS's other than windows.

Another launcher? AGAIN? Damn, this market is getting too over-saturated. Eventually you're gonna need to download a launcher for EVERY publisher in existence and by that time everyone will have gone back to piracy. Too many damned launchers to keep up with.

Steam provides a mechanism for downgrading games. I can't think of a single other ecosystem that allows that. What, you think R* would let you download the pre-deleted-music versions of its games?

And you're implying that any other company (besides the rare exception like GOG) would have any incentive to offer features beneficial to consumers. What a joke. Take-Two's stance is pretty well known. All these new launchers and streaming services are just a cash grab; gotta inflate those quarterly reports and pound consumers with more DRM. They forced this launcher into the Steam version of GTA-V, and broke offline mode in the process, perhaps intentionally.

"Competition" is never an absolute good. Exclusivity negates any possible benefits.

Rockstar did a stupid thing. Their games are already on Steam so its not like anybody will download this. If they start forcing their launcher however I will smack them right across the face.

Looks like they're doing just that...

I was litterally just thinking why do i have so many launchers on my desktop. I just bought call of duty: modern warfare and I had to install blizzard's battlenet launcher to go along with Origin's launcher, Epic launcher, and of course the only launcher that I actually don't mind, Steam.
