The general public isn't wrong on this one, people like you I believe are the minority in this furry community or how you would want to put it. And such sexualizing of animals date way back.
This is from 1992:

There is a massive, massive collection of furry porn on the internet in a lot of areas. It is definitely an irrefutable fact.

That is precisely why I never wanted to be associated with it. Yes, it appears to be the sad truth.

I don't know, I can only talk from personal experience. The few "furries" I have personally met or got to know on the internet so far have been rational, decent people like anyone else.

I never took part in any sort of "fandom", I haven't experienced this dark side yet. I'm sure if you look deep enough you'll find ugliness in just about every corner of the net, no matter what the topic.

I have to admit, it is indeed frustratingly hard to find art on websites like deviantart that is not sexualized in any way. Few people seem to be in it just for appreciation of anthro art. Sad confirmation that you are probably right.
---------------
I've made an interesting observation that it appears to be people with Asperger's in particular, who are drawn to the idea of associating with an animal character. I don't know exactly why that is. Two of my coworkers are also in the spectrum, and they are much in the same boat as I. All three of us have a rather vivid fantasy, maybe that's the key?

One could probably make a serious study out of it.

My coworker loves dragons and designs awesome 3d models of them, for example. He's my go-to buddy whenever I need something modeled in blender for the 3D printer.

Anyways, I hope people will not think of me as a creepy, degenerate pervert for having an animal character as my avatar. I haven't had any unpleasant experiences on this forum so far. GBAtemp is a pretty nice community to parttake in. I'm thankful for that.

Think of it this way, look at everyone. Do their sexual preferences and such really cloud how they present themselves to others? You don't even need to think about furries, literally everyone who allocates some time in their life for sexual pleasures is just that, leisure.

You could be talking to the world's best fisting champion, but he will interact with everyone in a normal way, he's only different when he does, well, that. Just because someone seems decent, does not mean what he/she does in his/her free time is not weird to say the least.

EDIT: But of course, there are exceptions as always. I'm not saying for all people these leisure activities will not change someone's character or how they present themselves...

Ok, that I agree with!

Who knows? Hmm, it is for the best that we don't know. As long as I have nothing to do with it people can do whatever they want in their free time. Each to their own I say.

Man, it is hard to believe that people are getting obsessed over animal characters. I just think of it as a bit of harmless fun.

I wonder how this furry thing started in the first place? Nah, actually I don't really want to know.
But thanks for sharing your view on it.

Also one more thing, if you really just love animals, don't even think twice about putting yourself in any such category. This is nothing weird, it is very much normal. Especially in a world where civilization is just a fad, which makes animals look smarter.

I for one love crows for example, I think they're really funny and derpy animals. Many come to my windowsill and I feed them crackers, the friendly ones I've noticed fluff out their feathers and make themselves look chubby lol. The way they twist and turn in skepticism is really a meme in itself.

Another good advice, I'll take you up on that.:)

I enjoy sharing my thoughts with likeminded people, but other than that I'll keep it to myself.
No need to shove it into anyone's face. I would never mention it in real life either. No need to ruin that little bit of respect I have earned with people.

My coworker is an exception. He was all enthusiastic as folks with Asperger's often are and showed me his dragon models when we first met. One day he asked me what I think of this whole furry stuff and I told him what I wrote earlier. He thinks no ill of me for telling him this story. He doesn't want to be associated with it either, for much the same reasons.

Ok, I'm done now. Kinda relieved people are not wanting to burn me at the stake for having an animal avatar. I mean, in the same way I could have used a picture of Super Mario, it shouldn't give anyone the wrong idea.

Ah, sorry again for writing so much. I have a hard time putting thoughts into words without rambling.

I don't really have an opinion on 'em as I've never met one. I know gays, one or two identifying as asexual, a good handful of drag queens and three transgenders (2 male to female, one female to male). So it's not like my friend circle is prudish (it's fun being into BDSM: you get to hang out with all sorts of interesting people B-)). I just have never met one.

Hmmm...unless...that isn't the same as "primal", is it?

(for those interested: 'primal' was...or perhaps still is...a stupid buzzword within BDSM circles. The idea is to rely less on rules and protocol, and more on instinct in the bedroom/dungeon. Would be something I can get behind, but as soon as I started exploring things fell apart. For starters, yer average SM player under 50 isn't all that gung-ho for protocol and rules to begin with, so that part of the definition is already quite flakey ("oh, so you're rebelling against a convention that's been passé for over ten years. How interesting "). And that "more on instinct" went all over the place as well. Establishing leader/follower roles during play? Some said yes, others said no. Just going with what you had or use attributes as well? Again: some only relied on clawing and biting each other, others claimed to be primal when doing bondage. I can't remember if the "identifying as an animal" part was something I dared to ask, but at that time I was convinced that "being primal" just came down to "I like this label better than top/Dominant/master/Mistress/Godesss/switch/bottom/sub/slave/ <insert an idiotic number of other labels in the scene> ". In my view, it literally means nothing.)
