The "bible"(3ds.hacks - I can't post the link as I'm a new member) only lists up to 11.9.0 and I have 11.9.42

Also, can I still play Pokemon Shuffle (competitions) if I've hacked my 3DS?

Yes, its the same thing. and for pokemon, yes you are able to, just dont use cheats when online and you will be fine.

I've been buying 3DS games for years but I recently stopped as it's an aging system with low battery life (it used to last all day!). Still, picking up a couple of titles for free is too good an opportunity to pass up.

A couple of questions:

Do I download directly for free from the eshop?
Do I use the 11.9.0 or the ALL VERSIONS (when going by the 3ds.hacks guide)?

No. The eShop is not for free

If you have an ntrboot compatible flashcard yes. Otherwise if you dont have a flashcard with ntrboot use the seedminer method.

Haven't used my N3DS in ages, I'm currently on luma updater 2.2 - can I just run the 2.3 cia over it and then update my firmware or did things change?

Uninstall the older luma updater and install the new one and you should be fine.

I did start it but I hit a snag right away: Disable Wending of System Information in Spotpass.

My 3DS instead has the option to disable USAGE Information. These are not the same. But is this what I have to disable (other option, only 2, is Automatic Software Downloads).

I'm have 2DS, Ver. 11.9.0-42E

There are many ways to launch the homebrew menu. There's only one page for frogminer which they would all point to next, so you have to try to remember how you launched the homebrew menu.

Did you read the quote? Opening the Steeldiver game should open the homebrew menu.

Apparently it didn't. Luckily, my 3DS still works though.

Continue following the guide. When you've finished installing CFW you'll get permanent access to the homebrew menu.

I don't know how I can finish the guide though when it tells me to open Homebrew to launch frogtool. When I try to open Steel Diver it gives me the error (so no Homebrew).
