Yeah you're right, I just hope an actual retroarch nsp does eventually work, it feels shallow that it has to be chainloaded youknow

You can also use Nro2NSp to create a RetroArch NSP that forwards to the "retroarch_switch.nro".

Works great for me, I'm getting 60 FPS @ 714 MHz in LoZ - OOT using the mupen64plus_next core that m4xw posted. Not that was not a typo, 60 FPS using Powersaving Mode 3 (714 MHz)! :)

I'm confused why that would work but people are saying an nsp for retroarch won't get full potential?

From what I can tell, the original "retroarch.nsp" contained what is now known as "retroarch_switch.nro". So when using the original "retroarch.nsp" file, you were launching RA directly. But now that it's been moved to "retroarch_switch.nro", we're simply using the NSP file as a "shortcut" which then redirects to the "retroarch_switch.nro" file. Think of it like using a "Shortcut" in Windows.

As to why the original "retroarch.nsp" doesn't work, I'm assuming that it has something to do with the way the NS handles NSP files and the RA devs haven't figured out a way to get the original retroarch.nsp to work correctly and are now using NSP forwarding as a workaround.

I'm sure m4xw would have a more accurate explanation.

Was all good then midway through started crashing with an error occurred, using the latest nightly with the latest core m4xw tweeted and title redirection using HB menu

Even my old retroarch nsp was working fine now it isn't either

Title takeover is NOT a workaround.
You just saw what happened when 7.0 released and no NSP's work. It's not future proof in any way.
Also our NSP contained ban mitigations that no longer work with recent libnx and we will not release nor recommend *anything* NSP related.
We dropped support for good

All in all amazed at how fast emulation is progressing on the Nintendo Switch.
IF only Nintendo expanded on the Nintendo Switch Online part ... but sigh ... we will probably only get SNES when E3 comes around. (Dont get me wrong ... I would like that ... but it's all taking a bit too long).

So besides that above rant;
Im kinda happy I got a superbanned Nintendo Switch and a ipatched Nintendo Switch nowadays.
It gives me the opportunity to play around with all the great things the homebrew community is coming up with.
And N64 is just awesome to play on the go with the Nintendo Switch.

Keep up the impressive work everyone, much appreciated for sure!

Is using the HB menu as title redirection not good enough? Does it have to be an actual game?
If so would the best way to do it be find the smallest compatible game and edit the name and logo to look like the honebrew menu?

Meh for me i dont need the title i run to say homebrew menu i just care about gaming. In terms of smallest one would think thats best but for whatever reason that does not always seem to work. I use pokemon quest and i suggest others do the same and no you dont need a legit eshop copy nsp works just fine

Ok I'm lost here
Using the latest nightly retroarch and the mupen core m4xw tweeted recently
Yesterday mupen worked through both the HBmenu and the retroarch NSP, but now gives the software error
Just tried title redirection through pokemon quest and still get the error

How is it NOT a workaround? It's obvious to me that having Titles on the Home Screen is more preferred by most people. Hence the reason you guys were originally using an NSP for RA in the first place! But now there are obviously issues that you guys can't figure out a way to resolve, so now you're resorting to using NRO's instead. Hmm, for not being a "workaround" it sure sounds like a "workaround" to me. *facepalms*

And just because something doesn't work as well on a newer FW, doesn't mean there aren't better solutions for older FW's. I'm on 5.1 and I'm having absolutely ZERO issues using NSP to NRO forwarding! The only two "issues" I've seen you talk about are "future proofing" and "ban mitigations" which both are of no concern to me.

I wouldn't say it's "not good enough" in general, clearly it comes down to what FW you're on. I'm on 5.1 and I have yet to have an issue. What FW are you on?

Ok I stopped using the core that m4xw tweeted and used the one that came with the nightly and it works again

edit

Ok seems the nightly isnt using the svc patch, went back to the tweeted core and it works fine again, this is driving me crazy

edit

and now it doesn't. I've tried newest build, updated svc core, original svc core, retroarch build from 14/1 that I was using up until a few days ago, HBmenu nsp, title redirection through pkmn quest.... sometimes it works then randomly starts erroring, other times it doesnt work at all the first time I try after replacing files... is there anything else I can do?

Quick question, which homebrew are you using to shut down your switch ? I see it to the right of your screen.

Just heads up: The current Atmosphere version now allows proper shutdown and restart from the regular menu, even with AutoRCM.

No need for custom nsps.

I know, I choose to use the Icons for convenience. It's just quicker to tap one of the Icons rather than having to hold the Power button down for 4 seconds, select "Power Options", then select "Restart" or "Turn Off".And it's less wear and tear on my Power Button.

Thanks for the heads up though. B-)
